Carmen Amaya Amaya (2 November 1918 – 19 November 1963), nicknamed ''La Capitana'' (English: ''The Captain'') was a Spanish Romani flamenco dancer and singer, born in the Somorrostro district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Somorrostro
Somorrostro Beach is a beach in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is located between the Hospital del Mar and Marina Street, in the far east area of the Barceloneta neighborhood, in the Ciutat Vella district. It is long and wide. The Somorrostro name was forgotten and the beach became one of the most popular in the city. It was not until 2010, Somorrostro beach got its original name back. History During the 19th century and part of the 20th century, the beach, and much of the neighboring beach areas were occupied by a shanty town, inhabited by 15,000 people living in over 2,000 slums. It was known during this time as a Romani community. It was not until the 1966 visit of Spanish caudillo Francisco Franco that the slum removal began. Arturo Toscanini (; ; March 25, 1867January 16, 1957) was an Italian conductor. Sabicas (proper name: Agustín Castellón Campos) (16 March 1912 – 14 April 1990) was a Spanish flamenco guitarist of Romani origin. Biography Sabicas was born in Pamplona, Spain, and began playing guitar at the age of five and made his performing debut two years later. His early style was influenced by Ramón Montoya, to whom he was related on his mother's side of the family. Extensive collaboration with important ''cantaores'' (male flamenco singers) of the period helped him develop his personal style. Leaving Spain in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile in Latin America with ''bailaora'' (dancer) Carmen Amaya. He lived in Mexico City, married Esperanza González Erazo and had four children of the marriage: Maricruz 1944, Carlos 1946, Agustine 1952 and Margaret 1956. Ramón Montoya
Ramón Montoya (November 2, 1879, Madrid, Spain – July 20, 1949, Madrid, Spain) was a Flamenco guitarist and composer. Born into a family of Gitano ( Romani) cattle traders, Ramón Montoya used earnings from working in the trade to purchase his first guitar. He began playing in the cafés de cante before he was twenty years of age. He formed a partnership with the great flamenco cantaor (singer) Antonio Chacón that started in 1912 and lasted more than a decade. Both participated in the Concurso de Cante Jondo of 1922 held in Granada. These two were largely responsible for establishing the form of the various traditional flamenco cantes that are recognized today.
