Carlsbad Project
The Carlsbad Irrigation District, also known as Carlsbad Reclamation Project or Irrigation system of the Pecos Irrigation and Improvement Company, is a major early water reclamation project located near Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. Begun in the 1880s, it is now managed by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, and provides irrigation water to a large area around Carlsbad, diverted from the Pecos River and the Black River. The late 19th and early 20th-century elements of the project were designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964. and History and description The city of Carlsbad is located in the northern reaches of the Chihuahuan Desert. Avalon Dam
Avalon Dam is a small dam on the Pecos River about north of Carlsbad, New Mexico, United States. The dam is a storage and regulating reservoir, and diverts water into the main canal of the Carlsbad Project, an irrigation scheme. Location The Pecos River, a major tributary of the Rio Grande, originates in the mountains near Santa Fe, New Mexico, then flows through the relatively flat southeastern New Mexico plains. Temperatures in the summer may be as high as . On average there is only of precipitation annually, but storms may bring torrential rainfall, creating flash floods. In the late 1880s, settlers were looking for new land to farm in the west, but irrigation was essential in the Pecos Valley. Local government in New Mexico consists of counties and municipalities. Counties Municipalities A municipality may call itself a: village, town, or city. There is no distinction in the statutes and no correlation to any particular form (Mayor-Council, Commission-Manager, etc.). Unless provided otherwise in a municipality's charter, municipal elections are held on the first Tuesday in March of every even-numbered year. Malaga, New Mexico
Malaga is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Eddy County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 147 as of the 2010 census. Malaga has a post office with ZIP code 88263. U.S. Route 285 passes through the community. Formerly known as Kirkwell, Malaga was founded in the 1890s by Swiss immigrants and was named after the Spanish city of Málaga. Italian laborers were recruited to farm the area, and many settled in Malaga. It is within the Carlsbad Municipal School District, which operates Carlsbad High School. Malaga is on the Pecos Highway approximately 18 miles southeast of Carlsbad.
