Carlos Mejía Godoy
Carlos Mejía Godoy (born June 27, 1943) is a Nicaraguan musician, composer and singer-songwriter and one of the main representatives of the testimonial song or new song of his country. He grew up in a family related to popular music, folklore and traditional culture, which gave him a very early relationship with the cultural and artistic world of Nicaragua. He had a close friendship with the guitarist of the Camerata Bach and Los de Palacagüina, Pedro Miranda, and with the Nicaraguan musician Silvio Linarte. Carlos and Luis Enrique were pivotal in the nueva canción (new song) movement in Central America beginning in the 1970s. They were both honored with Nicaragua's highest cultural distinction, the Order of Rubén Darío. He actively participated in the Sandinista Revolution, composing a good part of the songs associated with it and spreading the cause of the fight against the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle throughout the world. OTI Festival 1980
The OTI Festival 1980 (, ) was the ninth edition of the annual OTI Festival. It was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, following the country's victory at the 1979 contest with the song "Cuenta conmigo" by Daniel Ríolobos. Organised by the Organización de Televisión Iberoamericana (OTI) and host broadcasters Canal 7 and Canal 13, the contest was held at the 1049-seat Martín Coronado room of the Teatro General San Martín on Saturday 15 November 1980 and was hosted by Antonio Carrizo and Liliana López Foresi. In this edition the number of participating countries reached a new record of 23 delegations, the winner was the performer of Puerto Rico, Rafael José, who had previously represented his country back in 1978. The Rough Guide To The Music Of Central America
''The Rough Guide to the Music of Central America'' is a world music compilation album originally released in 2001. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, it has been described as the first comprehensive CD collection of Central American music. The album contains five tracks from Belize, three each from Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, two from Panama, and one from Guatemala. The compilation was compiled by Daniel Rosenberg, co-ordinated by Duncan Baker and produced by Phil Stanton, co-founder of the World Music Network. Thom Jurek of AllMusic gave the album four stars, calling the music a "revelation" and a "stunning wake-up call". Robert Christgau was less enthusiastic, describing the album as leaning more toward Creole cultures than the "subcontinent" warranted. The Nicaraguan Revolution () began with rising opposition to the Somoza dictatorship in the 1960s and 1970s, the ouster of the dictatorship in 1978–79, and fighting between the government and the Contras from 1981 to 1990. The revolution revealed the country as one of the major proxy war battlegrounds of the Cold War. The initial overthrow of the Somoza dictatorial regime in 1978–79 cost many lives, and the Contra War of the 1980s took tens of thousands more and was the subject of fierce international debate. La Cuneta Son Machín, also known as La Cuneta, is a Grammy-nominated musical group from Nicaragua. The original group consisted of Carlos Luis Mejía, Augusto Mejía (both sons of famous Nicaraguan singer Carlos Mejía Godoy), Carlos Guillén Mejía (Frijol), Fabio Buitrago, Omar Suazo, and Cesar Rodriguez. History La Cuneta Son Machín formed in 2009 while the members (who are friends and cousins) spontaneously joined the Santo Domingo Festival parade in Managua, Nicaragua. Camilo Ernesto Mejía (born August 28, 1975) is a Nicaraguan who left the United States Army during the Iraq War on conscientious objector grounds, was convicted of desertion and went on to become an anti-war activist. Service and court-martial Mejía is a graduate of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where he majored in psychology and Spanish.A. The Nicaraguan National Guard (, otherwise known as ) was a militia and a gendarmerie created in 1925 during the United States occupation of Nicaragua, occupation of Nicaragua by the United States. General elections were held in Nicaragua on 5 November 2006. The country's voters went to the polls to elect a new President of the Republic and 90 members of the National Assembly.
