Caribbean Conference Of Churches
The Caribbean Conference of Churches is a regional ecumenical body with 33 member churches in 34 territories across the Dutch, English, French and Spanish speaking territories of the Caribbean. It was founded in 1973 and is based in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. The CCC grew out of the work of the Christian Action for Development in the Caribbean (CADEC) and the Action for the Renewal of the Churches (ARC). Member churches and organizations are made of Christians from the Catholic, Protestant and Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (Archdiocese of the Caribbean and Latin America) denominations. The Jamaica Baptist Union is a Baptist Christian denomination, affiliated with the Baptist World Alliance, founded in 1849 in Jamaica. The headquarters is in Kingston, Jamaica. The president of the union is Rev. Dr. Glenroy Lalor. History The Baptist Union of Jamaica dates back to 1782 when George Liele, a formerly-enslaved man from Atlanta, Georgia, came to Jamaica and began preaching in Kingston. In 1814, the Baptist Missionary Society, a British organization, sent its first missionary to the island to open a school in Falmouth in Trelawny Parish, for the children of slaves. The ministry continued to grow and expand during British colonization. Baptists are involved in the struggle for the abolition of slavery. After abolition, Baptists contributed to the creation of "Free Villages" for the newly emancipated people. Presbyterian Church Of Guyana
The Presbyterian Church of Guyana was founded by missionaries of the Church of Scotland. On September 23, 1815 a Scotsmen bought an unfinished church building from the Dutch. This was the St. Andrew's Kirk, Georgetown. The first minister was Rev Archibald Brown, who arrived in September 1816. Many members were slave owners, but from 1821 slaves were admitted to the worship services. The church developed, the Presbyterian Church of Guyana was formed in 1837. By 1861 it absorbed the remnants of the Nederduitch Hervormde Kerk in Guyana. In 1945 a capital sum was paid to the presbytery and the church ceased its financial aid. In 1967 the Church of Scotland dissolved the Presbytery and it became an autonomous denomination. Membership was 5,600 in 25 congregations. It adheres to the Westminster Confession. The Presbyterian Church of Trinidad and Tobago is a Presbyterian church in Trinidad and Tobago, established by missionaries from the Presbyterian Church in Canada. History Presbyterianism was established in Trinidad with the arrival of missionary Alexander Kennedy from Scotland in 1836.
