The U.S. Virgin Islands is home to one of the smallest TV markets as defined by Nielsen market research, with only 5 full-power stations on Saint Thomas and Saint Croix. Nielsen Media Research
Nielsen Media Research (NMR) is an American firm that measures media audiences, including television, radio, theatre, films (via the AMC Theatres MAP program), and newspapers. Headquartered in New York City, it is best known for the Nielsen ratings, an audience measurement system of television viewership that for years has been the deciding factor in canceling or renewing television shows by television networks. As of August 2024, it is the primary part of Nielsen Holdings. NMR began as a division of ACNielsen, a marketing research firm founded in 1923. In 1996, NMR was split off into an independent company, and in 1999, was purchased by the Dutch conglomerate VNU. In 2001, VNU also purchased ACNielsen, thereby bringing both companies under the same corporate umbrella for years. WVGN-LD (channel 19) is a low-power television station in Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas, serving as the NBC affiliate for the United States Virgin Islands. Owned by Caribbean Broadcasting Network, it is a sister station to dual This TV/ Fox affiliate WVXF (channel 17). WVGN-LD's transmitter is located on Signal Hill. WVGN is available on Viya Cable channel 11, and as part of the Virgin Islands locals package on Dish Network. WCCV-TV (channel 54) is a religious independent television station licensed to Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The station is owned by the Asociacion Evangelistica Cristo Viene, Inc. The station maintains studios located at Barrio Membrillo in Camuy with transmitter facilities at Cerro Roncador in Utuado. History WCCV-TV WCCV-TV began operations in 1982 as WATX-TV, and was an independent with local programming. It was owned by Bay Industries. In 1984, WATX-TV, became a satellite of WSJU (channel 18), later in 1987, to WRWR-TV (channel 30). Low-power Broadcasting
Low-power broadcasting is broadcasting by a broadcast station at a low transmitter power output to a smaller service area than "full power" stations within the same region. It is often distinguished from "micropower broadcasting" (more commonly " microbroadcasting") and broadcast translators. LPAM, LPFM and LPTV are in various levels of use across the world, varying widely based on the laws and their enforcement. Canada Radio communications in Canada are regulated by the Radio Communications and Broadcasting Regulatory Branch, a branch of Industry Canada, in conjunction with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Interested parties must apply for both a certificate from Industry Canada and a license from CRTC in order to operate a radio station. WVIF
WVIF (channel 15) was a television station serving the United States Virgin Islands that was licensed to Christiansted, Saint Croix. The station was owned by Corporate Media Consultants Group (CMCG), which is 49 percent owned by Max Media. For much of its history, WVIF was silent, occasionally returning to the air as an independent station. At one time, it had planned to affiliate with the Fox network. History Channel 15 signed on in 2000 as Pax TV (now Ion) owned-and-operated station WPXO. WPXO was operated under a joint services agreement (JSA) with Alpha Broadcasting Corporation's WSVI (channel 8) in Christiansted. Paxson Communications (now Ion Media Networks) sold WPXO (along with WMPX-TV, now WPFO, in Waterville, Maine) to CMCG in December 2002.
