Carfin Emmet F.C.
Carfin Emmet F.C., sometimes spelt Carfin Emmett, was an association football club from the village of Carfin in Lanarkshire. History The club (officially registered as Carfin Emmet) was a successor club to Carfin Shamrock F.C.; initial club secretary John Breslin had been a stalwart at Shamrock at the start of the decade. The name had been used by a Juvenile side in 1891, but the first record of the Emmet is from its joining the Scottish Football Association in August 1899. The club was formed as the result of a split at Carfin Rovers and both clubs claimed the use of the same ground. Rovers did not survive the split, although its club secretary tried to claim that Emmet had inherited Rovers' debts; after the Scottish FA investigated the matter and ruled the clubs were separate entities, the Carfin secretary's letter was "relegated to the waste paper basket without being read". This was a Scottish non-league football (soccer) competition that ran at various times between 1891 and 1946. Eastern Alliance 1891–92 The Eastern Football Alliance was formed in 1891–92 by predominantly six Linlithgowshire clubs; Mossend Swifts, Armadale, Bathgate Rovers, Bo'ness, Broxburn, and Leith Hibernian (a club related to the original Hibernian). Kircaldy were later admitted to the league, but withdrew during the season and their results expunged. Leith Hibernian were dissolved before the tournament started, and were replaced by Adventurers. The league remained unfinished and was wound before the season finished. East of Scotland League 1893–94 The first East of Scotland Football League was formed in 1893–94 by six West Lothian clubs. Hughie Clifford
Hugh "Hughie" Clifford (8 April 1873 – 1929) was a Scottish footballer, who played for Hibernian, Stoke, Celtic, Motherwell, Liverpool and Manchester City. Career Clifford started his career Carfin Shamrock before joining Hibernian in 1887. In 1890 he moved south and joined Football Alliance side Stoke with whom he helped win the title. Midway through the 1891–92 season Clifford returned to Scotland and signed for Celtic in what was an "Illegal" transfer and he was suspended from English football for two years. He signed for Liverpool in May 1892 but never played a game as his transfer was "illegal" as he had already played for Celtic the previous week and the deal fell through. He returned to Stoke in 1893 and played one match in the 1893–94 season. He then went on to play for Motherwell, and spent the 1895–96 season with Manchester City. Patrick Slavin (5 May 1877 – 13 November 1916) was a Scottish professional footballer who played in the Scottish League for Motherwell and Celtic as an outside right. Personal life Slavin served as a sergeant in the Royal Scots during the First World War.
