Carey Group
The Carey Group is a group of small islands in the Queen Charlotte Strait-Johnstone Strait region of the British Columbia Coast, Central Coast of British Columbia, located between Crease Island to the north/north-west and Harbledown Island to the south/south-east. The group includes Ralph Island, Ralph, Alder Island (British Columbia), Alder and Larsen Islands and three small islands to the north of Larsen Island, including Madrona Island. Name origin The Carey Group was named for Charles James Carey, Royal Navy, RN, first lieutenant aboard HMS Clio (1858), HMS ''Clio'' under Captain Turnour, for whom Turnour Island is named. Carey, who served with the Royal Navy's Pacific Station based at CFB Esquimalt, Esquimalt, was born in 1838 and entered the navy in 1850. Madrona Island
Madrona Island, formerly also known as Arbutus Island, is an island in the Carey Group, located southeast of Crease Island in the Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Name origin Madrona comes from the Spanish language ''madroño'', referring to any of several evergreen trees (genus ''Arbutus'') of the heath family. CFB Esquimalt
Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt (CFB Esquimalt) is Canada's Pacific Coast naval base and home port to Maritime Forces Pacific and Joint Task Force Pacific Headquarters. , 4,411 military personnel and 2,762 civilians work at CFB Esquimalt. Pacific Station
The Pacific Station was created in 1837 as one of the geographical military formations into which the Royal Navy divided its worldwide responsibilities. The South America Station was split into the Pacific Station and the South East Coast of America Station. History The British Pacific Squadron was established in 1813 to support British interests along the eastern shores of the Pacific Ocean at Valparaíso, Chile. In 1837, when the South America station was split, this responsibility was passed to the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific. In 1843, George Paulet, captain of , took her out from Valparaíso to Honolulu to demand the islands of the Kingdom of Hawaii for Britain. King Kamehameha III capitulated and signed the islands over to Paulet. In the summer of that year, Rear-Admiral Richard Darton Thomas set out from Valparaíso in to rein Paulet in. Turnour Island
Turnour Island is an island in the Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, located between Gilford Island and West Cracroft Island. On the other side Canoe Passage on its northwest is Village Island, while to its south and southwest is Beware Passage, across from which is Harbledown Island. Gilford Island is to the north across Tribune Channel. Separating Turnour from West Cracroft is Clio Channel. Name origin Captain Nicholas E.B. Turnour commanded during the vessel's second commission with the Pacific Station of the Royal Navy from 1864 to 1868. Clio Channel was named for the ship. HMS Clio (1858)
HMS ''Clio'' was a wooden 22-gun , built at Sheerness Dockyard and launched on 28 August 1858. She was the flagship of the Australia Station between 3 September 1870 and 16 October 1873, and from 1876 was used as a school ship. Her first commission was on the Pacific Station and in 1860 she protected Panama City and the French citizens living within the city. While in the Pacific she was dismasted in bad weather. She returned to England and placed in reserve. Under the command of Commodore Frederick Stirling, she became the flagship of the Australia Station on 3 September 1870. In 1871, she was holed after striking an uncharted rock in Bligh Sound and was beached to prevent sinking. Charles James Carey
Charles James Carey (7 May 1838 – 14 March 1891) was a Royal Navy officer who rose to the rank of captain and won medals for his service during the Crimean War and the Second Opium War. Early life Carey was born on 7 May 1838, the fourth son of De Vic Carey of Le Vallon, Guernsey. According to ''The Star'' of Guernsey, the Careys were one of that island's most "distinguished and oldest families". Career Carey passed his Royal Navy examination in seamanship in April 1856. He served on , a 70-gun ship of the line commanded by Captain Astley Cooper Key. From January 1858, Carey served on under Captain Sir Robert M'Clure when the ship was engaged in the capture of Canton during the Second Opium War. Carey was promoted to acting-lieutenant in 1857 for his conduct during that engagement. His promotion was confirmed in 1858 and he served on in the Mediterranean.
