John Gwyn Jeffreys
John Gwyn Jeffreys FRS (18 January 1809 – 21 January 1885) was a British conchologist and malacologist. Biography John Gwyn Jeffreys was born on 18 January 1809, at Swansea, Wales. He was the eldest son of J. Jeffreys of Fynone, Glamorgan. Jeffreys was educated in Swansea at the Bishop Gore School (Swansea Grammar School). From the age of seventeen, he was an apprentice to one of the principal solicitors of Swansea, before going to London, where he qualified as a barrister in 1838. Jeffreys worked as a solicitor in Swansea until 1856, when he was called to the bar in London. But his greater passion was for conchology. He was not satisfied simply to form a collection, but was interested in all aspects of the biology of molluscs. On 2 April 1840 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. On 21 June that year he married Ann Nevill at Llangennech. They had a son and four daughters; and were the grandparents of the physicist, Henry Gwyn Jeffreys Moseley. In 1866 Jeffreys ret ... Robert Boog Watson
Robert Boog Watson FRSE (26 September 1823 – 23 June 1910) was a Scottish malacologist and minister of the Free Church of Scotland best known as the author of the report on the Scaphopoda and Gastropoda collected during the H.M.S. ''Challenger'' expedition to survey the world's oceans from 1873 to 1876. Watson also described various Opisthobranchia from Madeira. Life He was born in Burntisland in Fife, the son of the Rev Dr Charles Watson DD (1794-1866) of Burntisland and Isabella Boog. His brother, Sir Patrick Heron Watson was an eminent surgeon and a pioneer of modern dentistry. The family moved permanently to Edinburgh around 1840, living at 19 Royal Terrace on Calton Hill. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy. He served as Chaplain to the Highland Brigade during the Crimean War, and later in Madeira. In 1858 he was living with his wife in Bombay in India. Carenzia Trispinosa
''Carenzia trispinosa'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Seguenziidae. Description (Original description by Watson) The size of the shell varies between 3 mm and 4.8 mm. The thin, smooth, umbilicate shell is small. It has a high spire with a conical shape. It is scalar with three rows of tubercled lirations. Sculpture. There is a sharp circumbasal carina. Above this is a broad shallow furrow. About one third up the whorl is a narrow and blunt liration. A little more remote is a third, separated by a narrow, horizontal, flat surface from the suture. All these three lirations are orname ted with little tubercles or blunt spines, which are strongest on the highest thread, and there number about twenty-five on the body whorl, on the second thread there are about twenty-eight. The base, which is rather flatly arched, has round the outside a flat surface hardly deep enough to be called a furrow, defined on the inner side by a clear narr ... Mattheus Marinus Schepman
Mattheus Marinus Schepman (17 August 1847 – 19 November 1919) was a Dutch people, Dutch malacologist. He was one of the foremost collectors of mollusc shells in the Netherlands, and was also high on the overall list of European collectors. Dutch collectors developed an interest in natural history specimens that were collected on worldwide expeditions since the 16th century. An interest in conchology led to numerous shell publications. In 1934 the Nederlandse Malacologische Vereniging (Netherlands Malacological Society) was founded. In commemoration of its 75th anniversary, a book honoring in detail the work of Mattheus Schepman was published. His research Schepman was both a collector and a methodical scientist, which combination "made his collection of great value to the entire malacological community." He was given the opportunity to study a collection by Max Carl Wilhelm Weber, Director of the Zoological Museum Amsterdam, Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). Many of the speci ... Carenzia Melvillii
''Carenzia melvilli'' is a species of small deep water sea snails, a marine (ocean), marine gastropod mollusk in the family (biology), family Seguenziidae. Description Shell It has a conical, scalar, umbilicate, whitish shell. It is moderately large for its genus with a height of 4.5 mm. It contains seven Whorl (mollusc), whorls. The nucleus is wanting. The upper whorls are eroded, while the lower ones each contain three spiral lirae. The upper one runs at a little distance from the shallow but distinct Suture (anatomy), suture, which is slightly undulate. From the first liration to the second, the shell is slightly convex, this latter liration is strong, prominent and divides the whorls in two subequal parts. Below this liration the shell is concave towards the basal or peripheral liration, which in the upper whorls, runs just in the suture and in the last one borders the basal surface. These lirations are slightly spinous. Distinct undulating plications run from one to t ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
