Cardiff Parkrun
Cardiff parkrun is a parkrun event that takes place every Saturday morning at 9 am in Cardiff, Wales. The parkrun was the first in Wales and has become the second largest in the UK. The run was started on 16 February 2008 and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2018 with its largest ever attendance. The course The course is an out-and-back run on the Taff trail along the River Taff, within Bute Park, and on tarmac footpaths. The event director set up nearby Grangemoor parkrun in 2015 and a third parkrun in Cardiff is planned to reduce congestion on the course. Suspension The event was briefly suspended in 2011 by Cardiff Council for health and safety reasons. The suspension was criticised by Kevin Brennan, the local Member of Parliament, and the Wales Online portal remarked that there is a parkrun in war-torn Afghanistan. Media Wales Ltd. is a publishing company based in Cardiff, Wales. As of 2009 it was owned by Reach plc (formerly known as the Trinity Mirror Group). It was previously known as the Western Mail & Echo Ltd. History The ''Western Mail'' was founded in 1869 by the 3rd Marquess of Bute as a Conservative newspaper. In 1893, the original building in St. Mary Street was destroyed by fire and a new building was opened also in St Mary Street two years later. Parkrun
Parkrun (stylised as parkrun) is a collection of 5K run, events for runners, walkers and volunteers that take place every Saturday morning at more than 2,000 locations in 23 countries across five continents. Parkrun was founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt on 2 October 2004 at Bushy Park in London, England. The event was originally called the Bushy Parkrun, Bushy Park Time Trial. It grew into a network of similar events called the UK Time Trials, before adopting the name Parkrun in 2008 and expanding into other countries. The first event outside the United Kingdom was launched in Zimbabwe in 2008, followed by Denmark in 2009, South Africa and Australia in 2011 and the United States in 2012. Dame Kelly Holmes
Dame Kelly Holmes (born 19 April 1970) is a retired British middle distance athlete and television personality. Holmes specialised in the 800 and 1500 metres events and won gold medals for both distances at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. She set British records in numerous events and still holds the records over the 600, and 1000 metre distances. She held the British 800 metre record until 2021. Inspired by a number of successful British middle-distance runners in the early 1980s, Holmes began competing in middle-distance events in her youth. She joined the British Army, but continued to compete at the organisation's athletics events. She turned to the professional athletics circuit in 1993 and in 1994 she won the 1500 m at the Commonwealth Games and took silver at the European Championships. Iwan Thomas
Iwan Gwyn Thomas (born 5 January 1974) is a Welsh sprinter who represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Olympic Games in the 400 metres, and Wales at the Commonwealth Games. Thomas is a former European, Commonwealth Games and World 4 × 400 metres relay champion. Thomas is the former UK 400 m record holder, with his time of 44.36s set in Birmingham on 13 July 1997 standing until Matthew Hudson-Smith broke the record in May 2022. Helen Rebecca Jenkins, ''née'' Tucker (born 8 March 1984) is Two-time Triathlon World Champion (2008 & 2011) Helen Jenkins is one of Britain’s most celebrated triathletes having represented Team GB at the Olympic Games (2008, 2012 & 2016) and World Championships (since 2009) and Wales at the Commonwealth Games. Kevin Brennan (politician)
Kevin Denis Brennan, Baron Brennan of Canton (born 16 October 1959), is a Welsh politician. A member of the Labour Party, he served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Cardiff West from 2001 to 2024. He served as a minister of state at both the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Children, Schools and Families from 2009 to 2010. Charlotte Arter
Charlotte Arter (born 18 June 1991) is a British distance athlete. Arter comes from Cumbria but represents Wales in athletics, having qualified via the residency rule. Arter previously worked for Cardiff University, managing their high performance athletics programme. She is the current Welsh record holder in the half marathon. She is the current joint women's Parkrun record holder, setting a time of 15 minutes and 49 seconds at Cardiff Parkrun on 1 February 2020. She was the 2018 British 10,000m champion. Bute Park
Bute Park and Arboretum () is a park in Cardiff, Wales. It comprises of landscaped gardens and parkland that once formed the grounds of Cardiff Castle. The park is named after the 3rd Marquess of Bute, whose family owned the castle. History and description The Castle Green was landscaped in the late eighteenth century by Capability Brown, but the park itself was laid out from 1873 on by Andrew Pettigrew, head gardener to the 3rd Marquess. In 1947, the 5th Marquess of Bute presented the park to Cardiff County Borough Council.
