Caproni Ca.87
The Caproni Ca.87 was an Italian long-distance aircraft built in the 1920s for a planned transatlantic flight. Development In 1927, some Polish Americans conceived the idea of organizing a Polish flight across the Atlantic. Only two years later, Stanley Adamkevich from Chicago was able to organize this enterprise, and $36,000 was collected among Polish Americans. The crew for this task was chosen by the Polish government: the pilot of the 3rd Aviation Regiment, Captain Adam Kowalczyk, and LOT Polish Airlines pilot, Lt. Włodzimierz Klisz. Different aircraft were taken under consideration, but most were too expensive. Gianni Caproni of Caproni firm personally decided to hand one Caproni Ca.73ter night bomber, on the basis of which they built the Ca.87 record attempt aircraft, participating in costs for advertisement purpose. Caproni, also known as ''Società de Agostini e Caproni'' and ''Società Caproni e Comitti'', was an Italian aircraft manufacturer. Its main base of operations was at Taliedo, near Linate Airport, on the outskirts of Milan. Founded by Giovanni Battista "Gianni" Caproni during 1908, the company produced several successful heavy bombers during the First World War. Following the acquisition of several other aviation firms throughout the interwar period, Caproni transformed into a sizable aviation-orientated syndicate, the ''Società Italiana Caproni, Milano''. The majority of its aircraft were bombers and transport aircraft. It played a pioneering role in the development of the Caproni Campini N.1, an experimental aircraft powered by a thermo-jet. Ludwik Idzikowski (August 24, 1891 – July 13, 1929) was a Polish military aviator. He died during a transatlantic flight trial. Early life and service Ludwik Idzikowski was born in Warsaw. He started mining studies in Liège, Belgium. At the outbreak of World War I, he was conscripted into the Russian Army. He completed aviation school in Sevastopol, and from 1916 served in air combat units as an officer pilot. After the October Revolution he managed to return to Warsaw and in November 1918 Idzikowski joined the newly-born Polish Army, in the rank of ''podporucznik pilot'' (flying 2nd Lieutenant). In 1919 he joined the Polish Air Force and during the Polish-Soviet War, initially flew with the 7th fighter escadre ("Kościuszko's Squadron"), crewed mostly by American volunteers, then the 6th reconnaissance escadre.
