Cape Town City Football Club () is a South African professional football club based in Cape Town, South Africa, that plays in the Premiership. It was founded in 2016. A previous club under the same name was founded in 1960, before dissolving in 1977. The team plays its home matches at the Cape Town Stadium, and its training centre is based at Hartleyvale Stadium, the previous club's original home ground between 1962 and 1977. History Cape Town City was resurrected when South African businessman and former professional soccer player John Comitis purchased the franchise rights of defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces F.C. Comitis was one of two co-founders of Ajax Cape Town F.C. in 1999 but eventually sold his shares in 2013. In 2016, Comitis bought defunct Black Aces, located in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, and relocated the team with the franchise license in Cape Town. The MTN 8 is a South African soccer single-elimination tournament, cup competition launched in 1972 for teams who finished in the top 8 positions of the league table of the country's preceding season of the top-flight league (currently the South African Premiership, Premiership). The winners receive South African Rand, R10 million and the competition's trophy, which is one of the three domestic trophies attainable by its competitors each soccer season, with the other two being the top-flight league title and the country's premier knock-out competition, the Nedbank Cup. The 2023–24 South African Premiership, known as the DSTV Premiership for sponsorship reasons, and also commonly referred to as the PSL after the governing body, was the 28th consecutive season of the South African Premiership. The 2019–20 South African Premiership season (known as the ABSA Premiership for sponsorship reasons, and also commonly referred to as the PSL after the governing body) was the 24th season of the Premiership since its establishment in 1996. The season began in August 2019 and concluded in September 2020. Mamelodi Sundowns were the two-time defending champions. This season's winner will qualify for the 2020–21 CAF Champions League along with the second-placed team. The 3rd placed team and Nedbank Cup winners qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. The season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It resumed on 11 August 2020 after more than three months of suspension.
