Cannonball Run (film)
''The Cannonball Run'' is a 1981 action film, action-comedy film directed by Hal Needham, produced by Hong Kong firm Orange Sky Golden Harvest, Golden Harvest, and distributed by 20th Century-Fox. Filmed in Panavision, it features an all-star ensemble cast, including Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Jackie Chan, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin. The film is based on the 1979 running of the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, an actual cross-country outlaw road race beginning in Connecticut and ending in California. It was the 1981 in film, sixth-highest-grossing domestic film of 1981 and became the first installment of the ''Cannonball Run'' trilogy. It was followed by ''Cannonball Run II'' (1983) (which was far less successful at the box office and with critics) and ''Speed Zone'' (1989). Drew Struzan
Drew Struzan (; born March 18, 1947) is an American retired artist, illustrator and cover designer. He is known for his more than 150 movie posters, which include ''The Shawshank Redemption'', ''Blade Runner'', ''E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial'', as well as films in the ''Indiana Jones'', ''Back to the Future (franchise), Back to the Future'', ''Harry Potter (film series), Harry Potter'', and ''Star Wars'' film series. He has also painted album covers, collectibles, and book covers. Early life Struzan was born on March 18, 1947, in Oregon City, Oregon. In 1965, at age 18, he enrolled at the ArtCenter College of Design, then in West Los Angeles. Career Early career A counselor asked Struzan about his interests and told him he had a choice between fine art or illustration. The counselor described the two careers, telling Struzan that as a fine artist he could paint whatever he wanted, but as an illustrator he could paint for money. Donn Cambern
Donn Cambern (October 9, 1929 – January 18, 2023) was an American film editor with more than three dozen feature film credits. His editing of '' Romancing the Stone'' (1984) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film Editing along with fellow editor Frank Morriss, and his editing of ''Easy Rider'' (1969) has been noted as particularly innovative and influential. He was awarded the American Cinema Editors Career Achievement Award in 2004. Cambern was born in Los Angeles, California, and obtained a B.A. in music from UCLA. Cambern began his career as a music editor for ''The Andy Griffith Show'' before moving into film editing. Officially credited with editing ''The Last Picture Show'' (1971), Cambern's involvement was called into question in the 1999 documentary, ''The Last Picture Show: A Look Back''. The Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, widely known as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run, was an unofficial, unsanctioned automobile race run five times in the 1970s from New York City and Darien, Connecticut, on the East Coast of the United States to the Portofino Inn in the Los Angeles suburb of Redondo Beach, California. The Cannonball Run races have additionally inspired numerous contemporary efforts by independent teams to set the record time for the route, known as the Cannonball Run Challenge. The races were named after Erwin Baker. Conceived by car magazine writer and auto racer Brock Yates and fellow ''Car and Driver'' editor Steve Smith, the first run was not a competitive race as only one team was running. Sammy Davis Jr
Samuel George Davis Jr. (December 8, 1925 – May 16, 1990) was an American singer, actor, comedian, dancer, and musician. At age two, Davis began his career in Vaudeville with his father Sammy Davis Sr. and the Will Mastin Trio, which toured nationally, and his film career began in 1933. After military service, Davis returned to the trio and became a sensation following key nightclub performances at Ciro's (in West Hollywood) in 1951, including one after the Academy Awards ceremony. With the trio, he became a recording artist. In 1954, at the age of 29, he lost his left eye in a car accident.
