Canadian Turf Stakes
The Canadian Turf Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race, by invitation for four-year-olds and older over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the turf track, held annually in late February or early March at Gulfstream Park, Hallandale Beach, Florida. The event currently carries a purse of $150,000. History The race was first run in 1967 and was named in recognition of the Canadian Centennial that was being celebrated that year by many Canadian racing fans who vacation in Florida during the winter months. The 1990 Canadian Triple Crown champion and Horse of the Year, Izvestia, wintered in Florida and made his 1991 racing debut with a win in this race. The race was downgraded to a listed race for 2005 and 2006 when it was restored to its Grade III status. Phipps Stable
Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps (September 18, 1940 – April 6, 2016) was an American financier, Thoroughbred racehorse industry executive, and horse breeder. Widely known by the nickname "Dinny," he was chairman of the family's Bessemer Trust until retiring in 1994, and served as its vice chairman. Early life Ogden Mills Phipps was the son of major Thoroughbred breeder Ogden Phipps and Lillian Bostwick Phipps. His grandmother Gladys Mills Phipps owned the renowned Wheatley Stable and his great-grandfather Ogden Mills was involved with Thoroughbreds starting at the end of the 19th century. Joel Rosario (born January 14, 1985) is a Dominican jockey who mainly competes in American thoroughbred horse racing, originally from the Dominican Republic. In the space of five weeks in 2013 he rode the winners of the Dubai World Cup and the Kentucky Derby. In 2021 he rode Knicks Go to wins in the Pegasus World Cup, Whitney Stakes, and Breeders' Cup Classic. Heart to Heart (foaled February 2, 2011) is a Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 2018 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap. Career Heart to Heart's first race was on July 13, 2013, at Arlington, where he came in first. His next win did not come until April 9, 2014, when he won at Keeneland. Heart to Heart went on a three race winstreak starting on August 20, 2014, when he won the Better Talk Now Stakes. He then won the Jefferson Cup Stakes on September 27, 2014. On November 15, 2014, he then won the Commonwealth Turf Stakes. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 – February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC.
