Canadian Credit Union Association
The Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA; ) is the national trade association for credit unions in Canada (outside the province of Quebec). Founded in 1953, it rebranded to its current name in January 2016 to reflect its "evolving role as an association that is focused on growing a stronger... credit union industry." CCUA was founded as the Canadian Co-operative Credit Society (CCCS) to support a growing credit union system in the 1950s. It was renamed to Credit Union Central of Canada in 1993 to better reflect its relationship to its provincial member credit union league, credit union centrals before rebranding to its current name in January 2016 to reflect its evolving role in fostering a stronger Canadian credit union industry. Bill Knight
William George Knight (born October 24, 1947) is a former senior executive and Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of Canada. Knight was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan. A teacher by profession, Knight was first elected as a New Democratic Party MP in a 1971 by-election and was re-elected in 1972. He represented the riding of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan until his defeat in the 1974 federal election by Liberal Ralph Goodale. Knight attempted to return to Parliament from the same constituency in 1979 but was defeated by Progressive Conservative Lenard Gustafson. Knight served as principal secretary to both federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent and Saskatchewan Premier Allan Blakeney in the 1970s. Credit Unions Of Canada
Canada has significant per-capita membership in credit unions, representing more than a third of the working-age population. Credit union membership is largest in Quebec, where they are known as ''caisses populaires'' (people's banks), and in western Canada. Legislation Responsibility for the incorporation and regulation of credit unions resides primarily at the provincial and territorial level in Canada. Credit union legislation exists in every province of Canada but does not currently exist in the three northern territories. Ian MacPherson (historian)
Ian MacPherson (1939 – November 16, 2013) was a Canadian historian, and a supporter of the co-operative movement. MacPherson was born in Toronto, Ontario. Education MacPherson received his B.A. from the University of Windsor in 1960. Humanomics
Humanomics is a national initiative that was launched by a number of credit unions across Canada on May 1, 2014. The purpose of the Program is to bring a human focus to the concept of economics, by having the participating credit unions support their communities by re-investing profits, and provide opportunities to improve Canadians’ financial well-being. Part of their work to bring the Humanomics Program to the market involved the credit unions commissioning a national poll to gauge Canadians’ financial behaviours. The research showed that the majority of respondents feel that financial institutions have a role to play when it comes to improving the financial well-being of Canadians. Desjardins Group
The Desjardins Group (, ) is a Canadian financial service cooperative and the largest federation of credit unions () in North America. It was founded in 1900 in Lévis, Quebec by Alphonse Desjardins. While its legal headquarters remains in Lévis, most of the executive management, including the CEO, is based in Montreal. Antigonish Movement
The Antigonish Movement blended adult education, co-operatives, microfinance and rural community development to help small, resource-based communities around Canada's Maritimes to improve their economic and social circumstances. A group of priests and educators, including Father Jimmy Tompkins, Father Moses Coady, Rev. Hugh MacPherson and A.B. MacDonald led this movement from a base at the ''Extension Department'' at St. Francis Xavier University (St. F.X.) in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) is a not-for-profit co-operative to establish and grow co-operatives, credit unions, and community-based organizations in less developed countries. Credit Union National Association
The Credit Union National Association, commonly known as CUNA (pronounced "Cue-Nuh"), was a national trade association for both state- and federally chartered credit unions located in the United States. CUNA provided member credit unions with trade association services, such as lobbying, regulatory advocacy, professional development, and professional services management. The organization operated out of its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and an operations center in Madison, Wisconsin. Credit Union League
A credit union league or credit union central is cooperative federation for credit unions. Canada In Canada, a credit union central is a back-end provider which provides infrastructure such as cheque clearance and online banking to its member institutions. Historically, one credit union central per province served multiple independent local institutions which were too small to economically build all of their own infrastructure to support ATM cashpoints, debit and payment cards, stock and mutual fund brokerage, online banking, wire transfers and cheque clearance. These groups (with the exception of Québec and neighbouring francophone communities, which were served by Desjardins) would in turn join a national group, the Credit Union Central of Canada.
