Campbeltown (; gd, Ceann Loch Chille Chiarain or ) is a town and former royal burgh in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies by Campbeltown Loch on the Kintyre, Kintyre Peninsula. Campbeltown became an important centre for Scotch whisky, and a busy port, fishing port. The 2018 population estimate was 4,600 indicating a reduction since the 2011 census. History Originally known as Kinlochkilkerran (an anglicization of the Gaelic, which means 'head of the loch by the kirk of Ciarán of Clonmacnoise, Ciarán'), Campbeltown was renamed in the 17th century as ''Campbell's Town'' after Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, Archibald Campbell (Duke of Argyll, Earl of Argyll) was granted the site in 1667. Campbeltown Lifeboat Station
Campbeltown Lifeboat Station is the base for Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Lifeboat (rescue), lifeboat at Campbeltown in Argyll, Scotland. It opened in 1861 and today operates both inshore and all-weather lifeboats. History There were few lifeboats in south west Scotland in the 1850s but the RNLI stationed one at Campbeltown in 1861. The cost was paid by Lady Murray of Edinburgh, the cost of the boat, carriage and boathouse came to £431. The local committee also managed a second station from 1869. This was known as Southend (Kyntyre) Lifeboat Station, Southend at Dunaverty Castle, Dunaverty Bay. A new boathouse was built at Campbeltown in 1898, this time costing £885; the old one was demolished and the site handed back to the land owner. Springbank Distillery
The Springbank distillery is a family-owned single malt whisky distillery on the Kintyre Peninsula in western Scotland. It is owned by J & A Mitchell & Company, which also owns the Glengyle distillery, the oldest independent bottler, William Cadenheads, and several blended scotch labels. Licensed in 1828, Springbank is one of the last surviving producers of single malt whiskies in Campbeltown, an area that once had over thirty active distilleries. Glengyle Distillery
Glengyle distillery is a long-established Scotch whisky production centre in Campbeltown, Argyll & Bute, that closed down in 1925. In 2000 it was totally re-planned as the first new Scottish distillery of the millennium. Its single malts are bottled under the name Kilkerran. Early history The Glengyle distillery was founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and completed in 1873. Shortly after completion in 1873 a storm took off the roof of the distillery. Mitchell had previously been involved with Springbank Distillery but following a quarrel with his brother John, with whom he owned Springbank, he first joined his other brothers at Reichlachan distillery before venturing out on his own. Campbeltown Single Malts
Campbeltown single malts are single malt Scotch whiskies distilled in the burgh of Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland. Once a major producer of whisky with as many as 30 distilleries, and claiming the title "whisky capital of the world", its production has markedly declined. Most of the distilleries have gone out of business and little trace of them remains.
