Campbell Russell
Campbell Russell was an American politician who served in the Oklahoma Senate and as an Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner. Early life Campbell Russell was born in 1863. He moved to Indian Territory between 1880 and 1882, settling in the Muscogee Nation (present-day Muskogee County). He later owned 27,000 head of cattle through his Prairie Stock Farm in Warner. He founded and funded the first free school for white children in Indian Territory. He built a four classroom school in 1905 and donated it to the town. Oklahoma politics Russell was elected to the Oklahoma Senate as a Democrat in 1907 representing the 27th district and served four consecutive terms. The Oklahoma Bar Association (OBA) is the integrated (mandatory) bar association of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. History The Oklahoma Territory Bar Association and the Indian Territory Bar Association merged in 1904 to form the Oklahoma Bar Association. After statehood in November 1907, the Oklahoma Legislature recognized the Association; however, it repealed the enacting legislation in 1938. In 1939 the Oklahoma Supreme Court reorganized the association and made membership mandatory to practice law in Oklahoma. William Wirt Hastings
William Wirt Hastings (December 31, 1866 – April 8, 1938) was an American lawyer, educator and politician who served nine terms as a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from Oklahoma between 1915 and 1935. Biography Born on a farm in Benton County, Arkansas, near the Indian Territory boundary, Hastings was the son of William Archibald "Yell" and Louisa J. Stover Hastings, and moved with his parents to a farm at Beatties Prairie, Delaware County (then part of the Cherokee Nation (1794–1907), Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory), Oklahoma, and attended the Cherokee tribal school. He graduated from Cherokee Male Seminary, at Tahlequah, in 1884. He was married to Lula Mayfield Starr on December 9, 1896, and they had four children, Grace, Lucile, Mayme, and Lillian.
