Camp Trousdale
Camp Trousdale, in Portland, Sumner County, Tennessee, was an early staging and training area for Tennessee Confederate units during the American Civil War, used from June through November 1861. A number of units of the Confederate Army of Tennessee trained in the camp before it was abandoned under pressure from the Union invasion of central Tennessee. Training camp Camp Trousdale was a convenient site for training soldiers. The area had previously served as a station on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. and was located in relatively close proximity to a major city, Nashville, Tennessee. It also had a temperate climate and was close to large open fields which were convenient for the training of volunteers who would later serve in the Army of Tennessee. Portland is a city in Sumner and Robertson counties in Tennessee. The population was 11,486 in 2010 according to estimates by the U.S. census bureau and in 2020 the population was 13,156. Portland is a part of the Nashville Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Portland is located on the Highland Rim in extreme northern Middle Tennessee. This region has always been known for excellent agricultural soils, a spectacular wildlife environment and an enjoyable climate. People were originally attracted from the tobacco belt in Virginia and the Carolinas to the Highland Rim for land speculation and production of dark tobacco. The 44th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry was an infantry regiment from Tennessee that served with the Confederate States Army in the American Civil War. John Houston Savage
John Houston Savage (October 9, 1815 – April 5, 1904) was an American politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives for the 4th congressional district of Tennessee. Biography Savage was born in McMinnville, Tennessee on October 9, 1815, son of George and Elizabeth Kenner Savage. He attended the common schools and served as a private in the Seminole War. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Smithville, Tennessee. Career After serving as a colonel of the state militia, Savage was the Attorney General of the fourth district of Tennessee from 1841 to 1847. He was commissioned as major of the 14th US Infantry in March 1847, and he was subsequently promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 1847-1848 11th Infantry Regiment (United States) in September of the same year.
