Camp Stanley (Texas)
Camp Stanley is a U.S. Army facility located at the Leon Springs Military Reservation, twenty miles northwest of downtown San Antonio near Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas. History In 1906 and 1907, an area of about 17,000 acres near Leon Springs, just north of San Antonio, was acquired by the military as a training ground and firing range. In 1917, the area was named Camp Funston in honor of Maj. Gen. Frederick Funston but was redesignated Camp Stanley to avoid confusion with Camp Funston in Kansas. Camp Stanley is named after Brig. Gen. David S. Stanley, a Medal of Honor recipient during the Civil War and a former Commander of the Department of Texas. The camp was used as a training ground during World War I and hosted the First Officers’ Training Camp and later the 57th Infantry Regiment, which included then Lt. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas
Fair Oaks Ranch is a city in Bexar, Comal, and Kendall counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 9,833 at the 2020 census, and an estimated 10,505 in 2021. It is part of the San Antonio-New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named after Ralph Fair Sr, an oilman who had a large cattle ranch on the now residential town. The Fair family decided to sell a portion of the ranch to build what is now Fair Oaks Ranch in 1975. Leon Springs, Texas
Leon Springs is an unincorporated community in Bexar County, Texas, United States, now partially within the city limits of San Antonio. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 137 in 2000. It is located within the San Antonio Metropolitan Area. History The region was settled in the mid-nineteenth century by German immigrants, most notably John O. Meusebach, George von Plehwe, and Max Aue. The Aue Stagecoach Inn became the first stop on the stagecoach route between San Antonio and San Diego, California. The community came to some prominence as the location of an officer training school at Camp Bullis. The original Romano's Macaroni Grill was founded in Leon Springs; however, the company closed down this branch after the second of two devastating floods in July 2002. Frederick Funston
Frederick Funston (November 9, 1865 – February 19, 1917), also known as Fighting Fred Funston, was a General officer, general in the United States Army, best known for his roles in the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War; he received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the latter conflict. Early life, education, and work Funston was born in 1865 in New Carlisle, Ohio, to Edward H. Funston and Anne Eliza ''Mitchell'' Funston. In 1867, his family moved to Allen County, Kansas. His father was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1884 and served five terms. Camp Funston is a U.S. Army training camp located on the grounds of Fort Riley, southwest of Manhattan, Kansas. The camp was named for Brigadier General Frederick Funston (1865–1917). It is one of sixteen such camps that were established at the outbreak of World War I for use as infantry division training camps.
