Camanche, California
Camanche (originally, Limerick; also, Clay's Bar) is a former settlement in Calaveras County, California, United States. Located at an elevation of 220 feet (67 m), the town was once called Limerick, before it was renamed to Camanche in 1849. The settlement of Camanche is now submerged under Camanche Reservoir. History In 1849, it was renamed Camanche (after Camanche, Iowa). Gold mining at nearby Cat Camp, Poverty Bar, and Sand Hill brought its population to a peak of 1,500. Mokelumne River water was brought in by Lancha Plana and Poverty Bar Ditch. A fire on June 21, 1873, destroyed Camanche's large Chinatown. Buhach, an insect powder made from a plant, was manufactured on the nearby Hill Ranch. Camanche is now inundated by Camanche Reservoir. A post office was opened in Clay's Bar in 1861 and renamed Camanche in 1864 before closing in 1886; it was re-established in 1887 and closed for good in 1962. Lancha Plana, California
Lancha Plana (Spanish for "Flat Boat") was a small settlement in Amador County, California, formed as a result of a flatboat ferry crossing across the Mokelumne River. History It was founded by Mexican miners in 1848. The remnants of the town were submerged as a result of the damming of the river to form the Camanche Reservoir. Lancha Plana Bridge crosses the lake now about where the town once stood. It was briefly known as "Sonora Bar", as most miners were from Sonora. Lancha Plana is registered as a California Historical Landmark. A post office operated at Lancha Plana from 1859 to 1919, with a closure from 1912 to 1913. Poverty Bar, California
Poverty Bar is a former settlement in Calaveras County, California, active from c. 1850s to 1862, and now covered by the waters of Camanche Reservoir. The nearest major town is Campo Seco, California. History Poverty Bar was founded south of the Mokelumne River from Lancha Plana in Amador County as a gold mining town during the California Gold Rush, nearby Camanche, California, Cat Camp, and Sand Hill. A post office was opened in Poverty Bar in 1858 and closed in 1864. Poverty Bar had a major fire on the night of September 7, 1859. The fire originated in the grocery store of Lorengo & Co., near the center of the town, and spread so rapidly in different directions that in a few minutes the entire town was in flames. It appeared to have been arson, the second such incident there during that summer.
