Calvin C. Goode Municipal Building
The Calvin C. Goode municipal building is a 10 story government office building located in Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. It opened in 1963 as the Phoenix Municipal Building and originally served as the city hall. The property also contains the Phoenix City Council Chambers in a separate circular outbuilding. Design and construction With the rapid growth of Phoenix after World War II the old County-City Administration Building had become inadequate. In the late 1940s the city began exploring the possibility of building a new city hall. In April 1957 $4.3 Million in Bonds was approved by voters to build a new city hall. The City of Phoenix selected the local architecture firms of Ralph Haver & Associates and Edward L. Varney Associates to design the new complex. Ralph Haver
Ralph Haver (1915–1987) was an American architect working in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona from 1945 until the early 1980s. Haver designed the Mid-Century Modern ''Haver Homes'', affordable tract housing executed in a contemporary modern style. Biography Born in California and trained at USC Pasadena as an architect, Haver arrived in Phoenix immediately after his service in World War II and began working with his brother Robert (a builder) and father Harry (a brick mason). He settled in what would soon become Uptown Phoenix — two miles outside city boundaries at the time. His first set of experimental modern contemporary ranch homes was built in the Hixson Homes subdivision near 12th Street and Highland—now called Canal North. He soon mentored under Ed Varney and remained lifelong friends and collaborators with him even after breaking off and creating his own firm. Phoenix City Hall is the center of government for the city of Phoenix, Arizona, United States. Background Located in Downtown Phoenix, the 20-floor, 368-foot (112-meter) building was designed by architect, architectural firm Langdon Wilson. Construction began in 1992 and was completed in 1994. It replaced the former city hall, now known as Old City Hall (Phoenix), Old City Hall.
