Calvet Museum
The Calvet Museum (, ) is the main museum in Avignon. Since the 1980s the collection has been split between two buildings, with the fine arts housed in an 18th-century hôtel particulier and a separate Lapidary Museum (Avignon), Lapidary Museum in the former chapel of the city's Jesuit college on rue de la République. It is one of the museums run by the Fondation Calvet. Its collections also include goldwork, faience, porcelain, tapestries, ironwork and other examples of the decorative arts, along with archaeology and Asian, Oceanic and African ethnography. History The hôtel de Villeneuve-Martignan The museum is housed in a building on the site of the Livrée de Cambrai, named after its last inhabitant, cardinal Pierre d'Ailly, bishop of Cambrai. Pierre Mignard or Pierre Mignard I (; 17 November 1612 – 30 May 1695), called "Mignard le Romain" to distinguish him from his brother Nicolas Mignard, was a French painter known for his religious and mythological scenes and portraits. Colisseum
The Colosseum ( ; , ultimately from Ancient Greek word "kolossos" meaning a large statue or giant) is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, just east of the Roman Forum. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world, despite its age. Construction began under the Emperor Vespasian () in 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus (). Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (). Louis-Michel van Loo (2 March 1707 – 20 March 1771) was a French people, French Painting, painter. Biography He studied under his father, the painter Jean-Baptiste van Loo, at Turin and Rome, and he won a prize at the ''Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture'' in Paris in 1725. With his uncle, the painter Charles-André van Loo, he went to Rome in 1727–1732, and in 1736 he became court painter to Philip V of Spain at Madrid, where he was a founder-member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1752. Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre (6 March 1714 – 15 May 1789) was a French painter, draughtsman and administrator. Life He was a student of Charles-Joseph Natoire at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture and painted a self-portrait in 1732. From 1770 to 1789 he was Premier peintre du Roi. Joseph-Marie Vien
Joseph-Marie Vien (sometimes anglicised as Joseph-Mary Wien; 18 June 1716 – 27 March 1809) was a French painter. He was the last holder of the post of Premier peintre du Roi, serving from 1789 to 1791. Biography He was born in Montpellier. Protected by Comte de Caylus, he entered at an early age the studio of Natoire, and obtained the ''grand prix'' in 1745. Joseph Vernet
Claude-Joseph Vernet (; 14 August 17143 December 1789) was a French painter. His son, Carle Vernet, was also a painter. Life and work Vernet was born in Avignon. When only fourteen years of age he aided his father, Antoine Vernet (1689–1753), a skilled decorative painter, in the most important parts of his work. The panels of sedan chairs, however, could not satisfy his ambition, and Vernet left for Rome. The sight of the whales at Marseille and his voyage thence to Civitavecchia (Papal States' main port on the Tyrrhenian Sea) made a deep impression on him, and immediately after his arrival he entered the studios of whale painter Bernardino Fergioni and marine landscapist Adrien Manglard. Jacques de Lajoue, a French architectural painter, was born in 1687 in Paris. Jean Valade
Jean Valade (1710 – 12 December 1787) was a French painter and pastel artist of the Rococo movement, specializing in portraiture. Early life He was born in Poitiers. Valade was the son of Léonard who was also a painter and Marie Bellot. He trained with his father before moving to Paris in 1739. He married Gabrielle Louise Remond, 20 November 1752, and has no descendants. His great nephew was Pierre-Jean-Baptiste Chaussard. School In 1750, he was admitted to the Royal Society of Arts and was appointed academician, September 29, 1754. Étienne Parrocel known as Le Romain (Avignon, 8 January 1696 - Rome, 26 August or 12 January 1775 or 1776) was a French people, French Painting, painter working in Rome in the eighteenth century.
