Calumet Sag Channel
The Calumet-Saganashkee Channel, usually shortened to the Cal-Sag Channel, is a drainage and shipping canal in southern Cook County, Illinois, operated by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD). A component of the Chicago Area Waterway System, it connects the Little Calumet River at its eastern end to the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal at its western end. The Cal-Sag Channel is utilized for inland shipping, recreational boating and drainage purposes in what was an active zone of heavy industry in the Far Southeast Side neighborhoods of the city of Chicago and adjacent suburbs. As a drainage channel, it is used as a conduit for treated effluent wastewater from southern Cook County, including the Chicago-area Deep Tunnel Project, into the Illinois Waterway. CN Joliet Subdivision
The Joliet Subdivision is a railroad subdivision of the Canadian National Railway in the Chicago metropolitan area. The 33-mile route runs from Joliet, Illinois to Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood, largely paralleling the route of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Union Pacific has trackage rights over the route, which meets the Union Pacific Joliet Subdivision at Joliet to reach Bloomington and St. Louis. The line also hosts Metra's Heritage Corridor commuter service, and Amtrak's Lincoln and Texas Eagle service (as far as Joliet). From Bridgeport, services reach Chicago Union Station via Canadian National's Freeport Subdivision. The Illinois Waterway system consists of of navigable water from the mouth of the Calumet River at Chicago to the mouth of the Illinois River at Grafton, Illinois. Based primarily on the Illinois River, it is a system of rivers, lakes, and canals that provide a commercial shipping connection from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico via the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. The Illinois and Michigan Canal (I&M) opened in 1848. In 1900, the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal replaced the I&M and reversed the flow of the Chicago River so it no longer flowed into Lake Michigan. Robbins is a village and southwest suburb of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,629 at the 2020 census. It is the second oldest African American incorporated town in the north following Brooklyn, Illinois, and was home to the country's first black-owned airport, Robbins Airport. History Robbins was incorporated on December 14, 1917 and named for Eugene S. Robbins, a real estate developer who laid out the village's early subdivisions.
