Calocera Cornea
''Calocera cornea'' is a jelly fungus that grows on decaying wood. It is a member of the Dacrymycetales, an order of fungi characterized by their unique "tuning fork" basidia. Its yellow, finger-like, tapering basidiocarps are somewhat gelatinous in texture. In typical specimens the basidiocarps become up to 3 mm in diameter, and 2 cm in height. The hymenium covers the sides of the basidiocarps, each basidium producing and forcibly discharging only two basidiospore A basidiospore is a reproductive spore produced by basidiomycete fungi, a grouping that includes mushrooms, shelf fungi, rusts, and smuts. Calocera Viscosa
''Calocera viscosa'' is a species of fungus in the family Dacrymycetaceae. In the United Kingdom, it has the recommended English name of yellow stagshorn. In North America it is variously called coral jelly fungus, jelly staghorn, yellow false coral, yellow tuning fork, and jelly antler. The basidiocarps (fruit bodies) are small, gelatinous, bright golden yellow, and branched. ''Calocera viscosa'' grows on logs and dead wood of conifers. It is a common species throughout Europe and has also been recorded from North America, Asia, and Australia. Taxonomy The species was originally described as ''Clavaria aurea'' by the German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt in 1793, but the name is illegitimate since it had already been used for a different species. The species was legitimately described as ''Clavaria viscosa'' from Germany in 1794 by South African-born mycologist Christiaan Hendrik Persoon. It was transferred to the genus '' Calocera'' by Swedish mycologist Eli ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Calocera Pallidospathulata
''Calocera pallidospathulata'' is a species of fungus in the family Dacrymycetaceae. In the UK, it has the recommended English name of pale stagshorn. Basidiocarps (fruit bodies) are gelatinous, pale yellow, and spathulate (widening towards the apex). It typically grows on logs and dead wood of both broadleaved trees and conifers. It is mainly found in Great Britain, but has also been recorded from continental Europe. Taxonomy The species was originally described from Yorkshire, England in 1974 by British mycologist Derek Reid. Description ''Calocera pallidospathulata'' forms pale yellowish, gelatinous fruit bodies up to 1 cm tall, comprising a whitish or pallid stalk and a pale yellowish, fertile head that is typically thin, flattened, and spathulate (widening towards the apex). The fruit bodies typically grow gregariously, but do not coalesce. Microscopic characters Hyphae lack clamp connections. The basidia are two-spored and typical of the Dacrymycetaceae. The spores ... Elias Magnus Fries
Elias Magnus Fries (15 August 1794 – 8 February 1878) was a Swedish mycologist and botanist. He is sometimes called the Mycology, "Linnaeus of Mycology". In his works he described and assigned botanical names to hundreds of fungus and lichen species, many of which remain authoritative today. Career Fries was born at Femsjö (Hylte Municipality), Småland, the son of the pastor there. He attended school in Växjö. He acquired an extensive knowledge of flowering plants from his father. In 1811 Fries entered Lund University where he studied under Carl Adolph Agardh and Anders Jahan Retzius. He obtained his doctorate in 1814. In the same year he was appointed an associate professorship in botany. Fries edited several exsiccata series, the first starting in 1818 under the title ''Lichenes Sveciae exsiccati, curante Elia Fries'' and the last together with Franz Joseph Lagger under the title ''Hieracia europaea exsiccata''. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academ ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
