Calloway Canal
Calloway Canal is an irrigation canal owned by the North Kern Water Storage District in Kern County, California. It originates from the Kern River, just east of Golden State Highway ( SR 204 freeway) in Bakersfield. It terminates at reservoirs located south of Whisler Road and east of SR 99 (Golden State Freeway), near McFarland. From the diversion, the canal travels west, around industrial development before turning southwest. After crossing Rosedale Highway ( SR 58), the canal makes a 120 degree turn, traveling northwest. It again crosses Rosedale Highway and then crosses the Friant-Kern Canal. The two canals run parallel to each other, traveling northwest. Although the canals run about apart, water flows in opposite directions. While the Calloway Canal is flowing northwest, the Friant-Kern Canal is flowing southeast. State Route 204 (SR 204) is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that connects SR 58 and SR 99 in the Bakersfield area. Passing through downtown Bakersfield, SR 204 also connects Bakersfield's three major freeways together (SR 99, SR 58, and SR 178). McFarland, California
McFarland (formerly, Hunt and Lone Pine) is a city in the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California, United States. McFarland is located north-northwest of Bakersfield and south of Delano, at an elevation of . The population of McFarland was 12,707 at the 2010 census and an estimated 15,506 as of 2019. History In the early 1900s, an educator named James Boyd McFarland moved to the Anaheim area from Zanesville, Ohio, to try his hand at real estate and walnut farming. McFarland visited Kern County in 1907 and was impressed with the land's crop-growing potential near a community called Hunt's Siding, which was a small agriculture and livestock-based community that served about 50 families. Friant-Kern Canal
The Friant-Kern Canal is a aqueduct managed by the United States Bureau of Reclamation in Central California to convey water to augment irrigation capacity in Fresno, Tulare, and Kern counties. A part of the Central Valley Project, canal construction began in 1949 and was completed in 1951 at a cost of $60.8 million. The Friant-Kern Canal begins at the Friant Dam of Millerton Lake, a reservoir on the San Joaquin River north of Fresno, and flows south along the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, ending at the Kern River near Bakersfield. In a typical year, it diverts almost all the flow of the San Joaquin River, leaving the river dry for about downstream. Henry Miller (rancher)
Henry Miller (July 21, 1827 – October 14, 1916) was a German-American rancher known as the "Cattle King of California" who at one point in the late 19th century was one of the largest land-owners in the United States. Life and work Born in Brackenheim, Germany as Heinrich Alfred Kreiser, he emigrated to New York City in 1846, where he worked as a butcher. He came out to California in 1850 under the name Henry Miller, a name borrowed from the non-transferable steamer ticket he had purchased from a friend in New York. Miller built up a thriving butcher business in San Francisco, later going into partnership with Charles Lux, also a German immigrant and a former competitor, in 1858. Charles Lux
Charles Lux (December 28, 1823 – March 15, 1887) was a businessman-rancher and (with his partner Henry Miller) one of the largest landowners in California. Biography Lux was born to Nicolas Lux and Marie Anne (Linck) in the commune of Hatten, in Alsace on the Rhine between Strasbourg and Karlsruhe. While yet a boy, he emigrated to New York City, where he found employment as a delivery boy for a retail butcher in Fulton Market. He eventually became a butchers' helper, making six dollars per month. He left New York for San Francisco in 1849; by 1853 he had opened his own S.F. retail butcher shop at 931 Washington Street.
