Calliope, Iowa
Calliope, Iowa was an incorporated town in northwestern Iowa. Calliope was formally incorporated in 1882. It served as the county seat of Sioux County, Iowa. The town of Calliope was annexed by the neighboring town of Hawarden, Iowa in 1893. History The Dutch settlers of Sioux County found politics and county offices in the hands of a few Americans at Calliope, Iowa. The town was laid out in 1860 on the Big Sioux River and less than one mile north of the business section of the present town of Hawarden. A portion of it is now included within the corporate limits of Hawarden and is still often referred to as Calliope. Calliope was the county seat from 1860 until 1872 when thereafter, it changed to Orange City, Post Office, 1862 to 1863, and again from 1869 to 1911. The Dutch Americans felt they had a right to vote because they were the same as the Americans. This did not sit well with some American settlers. Sioux County, Iowa
Sioux County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,872. Its county seat is Orange City. Its largest city is Sioux Center. History Sioux County was formed on January 15, 1851. It has been self-governed since January 20, 1860. It was named after the Sioux tribe. The first county seat was Calliope in 1860, then a small village with 15 inhabitants, and later part of Hawarden. The first courthouse was built in 1860 and served as such until 1872. A larger immigration wave began in 1869, primarily of Dutch. In 1872, Orange City was declared the seat. In June 1902, the construction began on a new Sioux County courthouse designed by W.W. Beach. Of red sandstone, it was completed in 1904, and still serves as the courthouse. From 1976 until 1982 the building was completely restored, and in 1977, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hawarden is a city in Sioux County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,700 at the time of the 2020 census. It is located on the Big Sioux River. History Hawarden was platted in 1882. It was named for Hawarden Castle, the Welsh home of statesman William Gladstone. Hawarden was incorporated as a city on March 18, 1887. Geography Hawarden is located along the Big Sioux River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Climate Hawarden is located very near to the center of the North American continent, far removed from any major bodies of water. This lends the area a humid continental climate, with hot, humid summers, cold snowy winters, and wide temperature extremes. Drachten (, ) is a town in the northern Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Smallingerland, Friesland. It had a population of around 56.098 in 2023 and is the Friesland#Urban areas, second largest town in the province of Friesland. History Beginnings Drachten began as a small community on the east side of the Drait (or Dracht) river. There, early settlers started draining the land to use it for agriculture. As the process of draining progressed, residents began to move further eastward in order to use the drained land—former bog, peatbogs—for agriculture.
