Marilyn (singer)
Peter Antony Robinson (born 3 November 1962), better known as Marilyn, is an English singer known for his androgynous appearance. He was one of Britain's most successful gender bending musical artists in the 1980s. First becoming a noted figure on the London club scene, Marilyn topped the European, Japanese and Australian charts with his 1983 hit " Calling Your Name". The song was later included on his 1985 debut album '' Despite Straight Lines''. Marilyn also contributed to the Christmas number one Band Aid song, " Do They Know It's Christmas?" He has modelled for several fashion designers including Jean Paul Gaultier and Vivienne Westwood. Photographs of him are housed in London's National Portrait Gallery. ''Despite Straight Lines'' is the only studio album by British singer-songwriter Marilyn, released in 1985. Overview Although Marilyn had scored three top 40 hits throughout the 1983–84 period, his debut album was not released until mid-1985, 18 months after his biggest hit " Calling Your Name" was a top 10 hit. Possibly due to a loss of momentum, the album only charted in Australia, and subsequent singles taken from it were also unsuccessful. The album was reissued on CD in 2008 as ''Despite Straight Lines: The Very Best of Marilyn'', by Cherry Pop (a division of Cherry Red Records). The reissue includes several bonus tracks, consisting of B-sides and alternative versions, though it excludes the single "Pray for That Sunshine". New Wave Music
New wave is a music genre that encompasses pop music, pop-oriented styles from the 1970s through the 1980s. It is considered a lighter and more melodic "broadening of Punk subculture, punk culture". Mercury Records is an American record label owned by Universal Music Group. It had significant success as an independent operation in the 1940s and 1950s. Paul Caplin
Paul Caplin (born 31 December 1954) is an English businessman, musician, songwriter, producer, videographer and technology entrepreneur. He studied mathematics at Imperial College, London and at Cambridge University. His career has spanned music, information technology and filmmaking. Musical career Caplin began his musical career in his early twenties as a founding member of the New Romantic rock group Animal Magnet, which was signed to EMI Records and supported Duran Duran on their first national tour. He left Animal Magnet to become the “mastermind” behind the 1980s avant-garde new wave pop project Haysi Fantayzee, the other members being Jeremy Healy and Caplin's then girlfriend, Kate Garner. Clive Langer
Clive Langer (born 19 June 1954) is an English record producer and songwriter, active from the mid-1970s onwards. He usually works with Alan Winstanley. He composed the music for the films '' Still Crazy'' and '' Brothers of the Head''. Biography Langer was born in 1954, to a Jewish Polish father who had fled Poland to escape the Nazis, before later settling in England and enlisting in the Royal Air Force. Having grown up in London, Langer studied at art school in Canterbury and at the Liverpool College of Art. Prior to his record producing career he was a guitarist with the British cult band Deaf School. Langer sometimes performed under the alias of 'Cliff Hanger', and his production work was sometimes attributed to 'Clanger'. Alan Kenneth Winstanley (; born 2 November 1952) is an English record producer and songwriter, active from the mid-1970s onwards. He usually works with Clive Langer. Early life He was born in Fulham in November 1952 to parents Ken and Doreen. After playing guitar in local groups he started his career at TW Studios in Fulham. Kent Music Report
The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music historian David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top 40 Singles from 1966, and albums chart from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. David Kent later published Australian charts from 1940 to 1973 in a retrospective fashion, using state by state chart data obtained from various Australian radio stations.
