California Poppies
California Poppies were a British speedway team based at Longmoor Speedway California in England, California Country Park, Nr Wokingham, Berkshire. History Speedway in California first started in 1933 at the California Country Park, an area known as California in England at the time. The track was situated on the north west side of Longmoor Lake (51°22'54.3"N 0°52'35.4"W) on land that formed part of Longmoor Bog and the track had a concrete starting grid. Events were held every year from 1933 to 1940 before the Reading and District Motor Club ended racing due to World War II. The team known as California Poppies first raced league speedway in 1954 in the 1954 Southern Area League and were crowned champions. The following season in 1955, they finished runner-up to Rye House Roosters before they competed for one more league season in 1955, finishing 4th. Tommy Sweetman
Thomas Henry Sweetman (born 21 July 1930) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned six international caps for the England national speedway team. Career Sweetman started his British leagues career for Aldershot Shots in the 1954 Southern Area League but the team withdrew and he finished the season with California Poppies, where he won the leagues with the club. He spent the 1955 and 1956 seasons with the Poppies but in 1956 he also rode for nomadic Southern Rovers. In 1957, he rode for the Rayleigh Rockets reserve team before taking the big step up to the National League, where he joined the Norwich Stars for the 1958 Speedway National League season. In 1959 he switched to Swindon Robins and doubled up with the Rye House Rockets in the Southern League, where he finished sixth in the league averages. 1956 Southern Area League
The 1956 Southern Area League was the third season of the regional third tier/division of speedway racing in the United Kingdom British teams. Brafield Flying Foxes were no longer competitors with Southern Rovers taking their place. Southern Rovers had no track and raced all their 'home' fixtures on away tracks. Summary Rye House Roosters were the champions for the second consecutive season. Although the Southern Area League continued, it became the second tier division instead of the third tier division. There was not another third division of British speedway until 1996 when the Conference was inaugurated. Aldershot Poppies
Aldershot Shots also known later as Aldershot Poppies were a speedway team that existed from 1950 to 1960, they were based primarily at Aldershot Stadium in Tongham, near Farnham. History In 1929, eight meetings were held at the 25 acres Aldershot Sports Stadium on Boxall's Lane. The first of these was held on Wednesday 3 July 1929. Although seven of the meetings were individual events there was one team fixture against Southampton Saints. The stadium is known to have hosted speedway in 1931 but would later become a reservoir (known as Badshot Lea Little Pond). The date that the stadium was demolished is unknown. In 1950, speedway returned to Aldershot at the greyhound stadium known as Aldershot Stadium. Rye House Rockets
The Rye House Rockets were a motorcycle speedway, speedway team based at Rye House Stadium, Hoddesdon, England. They competed in various British speedway leagues from 1954 to 2018. History Origins & 1930s Rye House began life in 1934, hosting open meetings on a circuit that had been converted from a former running track. Under the charge of the Harringay Light Car and Motor Cycle Club, the track soon became known as a training school for riders. The first Rye House team competed in several challenge matches throughout 1936. Whilst at Hackney in September 1937, Dicky Case purchased the lease of the sixty acre estate of Rye House and continued the training school at Rye House Stadium, operating under the name of the Hackney Motor Club. The 1954 Southern Area League was the first season of the newly named regional third tier of speedway racing in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams. It replaced the defunct Southern League. With most of the Southern League teams moving up to Speedway National League Division Two, six new teams started the season—many of them making their debut in league speedway.
