''California Crossing'' is the seventh studio album by the American stoner rock band Fu Manchu It was released on October 23, 2001, by Mammoth Records. Production The album was produced by Matt Hyde, who encouraged Fu Manchu to spend more time on preproduction and song arrangements. The band pushed the vocals higher in the mix for the album, worked on backing vocals, and tried to keep most of the tracks around three minutes. Circle Jerks singer Keith Morris provides vocals on "Bultaco". Drummer Brant Bjork departed the band after the recording of the album. Critical reception ''The Guardian'' deemed the album "a strangely nihilistic celebration of all things Cali." Fu Manchu (band)
Fu Manchu is an American stoner rock band formed in Orange County, California in 1985. The band underwent multiple lineup changes throughout the 80s and 90s, but has remained consistent since 2001. The band currently consists of founding guitarist turned lead vocalist Scott Hill, bassist Brad Davis, lead guitarist Bob Balch and drummer Scott Reeder. Fu Manchu have been long associated with the Palm Desert Scene, alongside bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss and Mondo Generator. ''Monster Riff'' has described the band as "one of the most loved and revered... bands in the stoner rock world." History Fu Manchu originally formed in 1985 as a hardcore punk band called Virulence. Dr. Fu Manchu ( zh, t=傅滿洲/福滿洲, p=Fú Mǎnzhōu) is a supervillain who was introduced in a series of novels by the English author Sax Rohmer beginning shortly before World War I and continuing for another forty years. The character featured in cinema, television, radio, comic strips and comic books for over 100 years, and he has also become an archetype of the evil criminal genius and mad scientist, while lending his name to the Fu Manchu moustache.
