Calheta De Nesquim
Calheta de Nesquim is a civil parish, along the southern coast of the municipality of Lajes do Pico, in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 343, in an area of 13.81 km2. History In the 16th century, during a tempestuous and dark night, a ship returning from Brazil, loaded with wood, shipwrecked along the southern coast of Pico. Three survived the shipwreck (João Redondo or Rodolfo; João Valim; and the ship's captain, Diogo Vaz Dourado), and were guided to safety by the ship's dog, to a small bay. The dog was named ''"Nesquim"'', and the small bay became known as the ''"Calheta de Nesquim"'' (''small bay of Nesquim''). Saint Sebastian
Saint Sebastian (in Latin: ''Sebastianus''; Narbo, Gallia Narbonensis, Roman Empire c. AD 255 – Rome, Italia, Roman Empire c. AD 288) was an early Christian saint and martyr. According to traditional belief, he was killed during the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians. He was initially tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows, though this did not kill him. He was, according to tradition, rescued and healed by Saint Irene of Rome, which became a popular subject in 17th-century painting. In all versions of the story, shortly after his recovery he went to Diocletian to warn him about his sins, and as a result was clubbed to death. Piedade is a civil parish in the municipality of Lajes do Pico on the island of Pico, the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 844, in an area of 12.81 km2. History The parish was founded after 1506, from the historical registers of the time. José Dias De Melo
José Dias de Melo (April 8, 1925 in Calheta de Nesquim, Lajes - September 24, 2008 in São José (Ponta Delgada), Ponta Delgada), was an Azorean author and writer. Biography He studied in the city of Horta, in the local lyceum and primary educational institution, but eventually settled in Ponta Delgada after 1949 where he was to marry and begin a family. He completed his courses in teaching in Ponta Delgada, and became a teacher in a preparatory institution before moving on to teach in Cova da Piedade (1976–1977) and Lajes do Pico (1978–1979). While in Horta he worked for the regional newspapers, including the regional newspapers ''O Telegrafo'', ''Açores'', and ''Ilha'', and the national media ''Diário de Notícias'' and ''Diário de Lisboa''; during his time in Horta, with other school colleagues, he helped found the Associação Cultural Académica ("Academic Cultural Association") in November, 1944. Santa Cruz da Graciosa () is a Portuguese municipality on the island of Graciosa, in the archipelago of the Azores. The population in 2011 was 4,391, in an area of 60.66 km².
