Calgary Mustangs (CPSL)
The Calgary Mustangs were a Canadian professional soccer team in Calgary, Alberta that competed in the original Canadian Professional Soccer League in 1983. History After the original five CPSL clubs were announced, Calgary was later announced as the sixth franchise. After being turned down by a couple of local investors, the league was able to convince West German player agent Edgar Edringer to invest in a team and the team was officially unveiled on February 24, 1983. Edringer announced his intention to be heavily involved with the franchise, moving to the city and serving as the team's general manager as well. He was confident that the team would be successful, unlike the former NASL Calgary Boomers who operated for only one season in 1981 before folding due to losses of over $2 million despite setting an NASL attendance record of averageing over 11,000 fans, in part due to his knowledge of the sport. Mewata Stadium
Mewata Stadium () was a multi-purpose stadium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was the home stadium of the Calgary Stampeders, both before and after the formation of the Canadian Football League in 1958, until they moved to McMahon Stadium for the 1960 season, where the team still plays. The land for Mewata Park was a gift from the Government of Canada. The Mewata Stadium opened in 1906, and by 1919 (if not earlier) had bleachers with a seating capacity of 10,000. The stadium was razed in 1999 and replaced with Shaw Millennium Park, including a greenspace and skateboard park. Cavalry Football Club, is a Canadian professional soccer club based in the Calgary metropolitan region of Alberta. The club competes at the top of the Canadian soccer league system in the Canadian Premier League, and plays their home matches at ATCO Field on the grounds of Spruce Meadows in Foothills County. The team is managed by Tommy Wheeldon Jr. and owned by Spruce Meadows Sports & Entertainment. Manfred Müller (footballer)
Manfred Müller (born 28 July 1947) is a German former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Müller began his career with Schwarz-Weiß Essen, before moving to Wuppertaler SV in 1971. Wuppertal immediately earned promotion to the Bundesliga, and finished a surprising third in their first season in the top-flight. The title challenge was not to repeated, however, and the club struggled against relegation in 1973–74, and dropped down the following year. After Wuppertal's failure to bounce back in their first season, Müller left, moving south to in 1976 to join 1. FC Nürnberg. In his second season at Nürnberg, they won promotion, beating Rot-Weiss Essen in a playoff, only to be relegated the following year. Müller was on the move again, and after a brief spell at ESV Ingolstadt, moved on to Bayern Munich, ostensibly as cover for Walter Junghans. Bruce Bates
Bruce Bates is a Canadian retired professional soccer player. Career A native of the Vancouver area, Bates played amateur soccer locally for Richmond Olympic and briefly spent time as a reserve player for the Vancouver Whitecaps. At the age of 20 he impressed the coaches of the Calgary Boomers during open tryouts enough to win a spot with the NASL side. He appeared in ten matches that year, but the Boomers folded after one season. In 1982 he joined Calgary teammates Jürgen Stars and Tom Boric on the Tampa Bay Rowdies roster. He also played for the Rowdies during their run to the 1983 Indoor Grand Prix title. Before the 1983 outdoor season began, he and Peter Gruber were dealt to Calgary Mustangs of the Canadian Professional Soccer League, where he was later named team captain. The Canadian Premier League (CPL or CanPL; french: Première ligue canadienne, links=no) is a professional men's Association football, soccer league in Canada. At the top of the Canadian soccer league system, it is the country's primary national soccer league competition. The league consists of eight teams, from five of provinces and territories of Canada, Canada's ten provinces. Each team plays 28 games in the regular season which is followed by playoffs culminating in the Canadian Premier League Finals, CPL Finals.
