Caleuche Chasma
Caleuche Chasma is a Y-shaped chasma on Pluto's moon, Charon. Caleuche Chasma is long. The feature was discovered using stereoscopic processing of ''New Horizons'' images. At approximately deep, it is the deepest known feature on the natural satellite, and one of the deepest known canyons in the Solar System. Naming Caleuche Chasma got its official name from the IAU along with eleven other surface features of Charon on 11 April 2018 in response to a proposal by NASA's New Horizons team. It is named for the mythical Chilean ghost ship Caleuche. The designation was a part of the Our Pluto initiative by New Horizons, which invited the general public to suggest and vote for names for surface features in the Pluto system. Caleuche was included in the voting on 21 March 2015. It did not make to the initial proposal, sent to the IAU by the New Horizons team on 7 July 2015 but was included later. Chasma
In planetary nomenclature, a chasma (''plural'': chasmata ) is a deep, elongated, steep-sided depression. As of 2020, the IAU has named 122 such features in the Solar System, on Venus (63), Mars (25), Saturn's satellites Mimas (6), Tethys (2), Dione (8) and Rhea (5), Uranus's satellites Ariel (7), Titania (2) and Oberon (1) and Pluto's satellite Charon (3). Canyons And Gorges
A canyon (from ; archaic British English spelling: ''cañon''), or gorge, is a deep cleft between escarpments or cliffs resulting from weathering and the erosive activity of a river over geologic time scales. Rivers have a natural tendency to cut through underlying surfaces, eventually wearing away rock layers as sediments are removed downstream. A river bed will gradually reach a baseline elevation, which is the same elevation as the body of water into which the river drains. Oz Terra
Oz Terra is the unofficial name given to a major geological region on Charon. The Pluto-facing hemisphere of Charon is divided onto two primary regions; Oz Terra in the north and Vulcan Planum in the south. These regions are separated by a series of scarps near Charon's equator, particularly Serenity Chasma and Mandjet Chasma. The region was discovered by ''New Horizons'' during its flyby of Pluto in July 2015. Geology Oz Terra sits about a kilometer higher than Vulcan Planum, and is typified by large crustal blocks, having fractured early in Charon's history. The region was formed about 4 billion years ago, when a subsurface ocean of water and ammonia flowed to the surface, and then solidified. Mordor Macula
Mordor Macula is the informal name for a large red area about in diameter near the north pole of Charon, Pluto's largest moon. It is named after the black land called Mordor in J.R.R. Tolkien's ''The Lord of the Rings''. Origin The origin of Mordor Macula is not completely understood. It may be a deposit of frozen gases captured from Pluto's escaping atmosphere, a large impact basin, or both. A leading hypothesis is that nitrogen and methane escape from Pluto and are then deposited into the cold poles of Charon, where scattered ultraviolet light then transforms the molecules into tholins. This hypothesis implies that a similar red spot should exist on Charon's south pole as welland indirect evidence suggests this is true. Pluto
Pluto (minor-planet designation: 134340 Pluto) is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper belt, a ring of bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune. It is the ninth-largest and tenth-most-massive known object to directly orbit the Sun. It is the largest known trans-Neptunian object by volume, by a small margin, but is slightly less massive than Eris. Like other Kuiper belt objects, Pluto is made primarily of ice and rock and is much smaller than the inner planets.
