Caledon State Park
Caledon State Park is a state park located in King George, Virginia. As of 2010, the yearly visitation was 49,328. The property was initially owned by the Alexander brothers, founders of the city of Alexandria, and was established in 1659 as Caledon Plantation. Ownership passed, in 1974, to the Commonwealth of Virginia. A portion of the park known as the Caledon Natural Area was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974 for its old-growth oak- tulip poplar forest. The park also provides a habitat for bald eagles along the Potomac River. Adjacent to the park is the Chotank Creek Natural Area Preserve, a state-designated private conservation area that further protects bald eagle habitat, in addition to wetlands and other significant communities. This is a list of state parks and reserves in the Virginia state park system. Virginia opened its entire state park system on as a six-park system. The six original state parks were Seashore State Park (now First Landing State Park), Westmoreland State Park, Staunton River State Park, Douthat State Park, Fairy Stone State Park, and Hungry Mother State Park. Chotank Creek Natural Area Preserve
Chotank Creek Natural Area Preserve is a Natural Area Preserve located in King George County, Virginia. The preserve is situated east of Caledon State Park, and borders the Potomac River to which the preserve's namesake, Chotank Creek, is tributary. It is part of the larger Cedar Grove farm, which is protected by a conservation easement. The preserve was dedicated in 2001 through an agreement with the property's private landowner. Chotank Creek Natural Area Preserve protects a variety of habitats and natural communities, including upland hardwood forests, marshlands, swamp forests, and brackish scrub. Large gatherings of bald eagles have been observed to congregate on the Potomac near the preserve, and several nests have been found on the property. The preserve is privately owned, and public access is not permitted. The site is managed with guidance from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
