Caleb Hanna
Caleb Hanna (born October 29, 1999) is an American politician who served as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, from 2018 to 2024. Hanna was elected to the office on November 6, 2018, defeating incumbent Dana Lynch. Caleb Hanna lives in Nicholas County, West Virginia. Career Hanna was first elected to public office in 2018 at 19 years old and was the youngest African Americans, African-American ever elected to a state office. He attended West Virginia State University as a full-time student and earned his B.A. in economics. Hanna serves as the Assistant Majority Whip, Chair of the Select Committee on Minority Issues and the Vice Chair of a Select Committee on Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse, and a member of the Education, Senior, Children, and Family Issues committee. Summersville, West Virginia
Summersville is a city in Nicholas County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,459 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Nicholas County. History Summersville was laid out in 1824. The city was named for Lewis Summers, a local judge who had introduced the bill to create Nicholas County. Summersville was home to both Union and Confederate encampments during the Civil War. The town was mostly burned down by the Confederate spy, Nancy Hart Douglas, during the war. The town was rebuilt by 1884. In 1914, Nicholas County High School was established, then located downtown in the "Old Main". More buildings were built on the campus to house the growing student body until a new building north of town was finished in 1978. Construction on Summersville Dam began in 1960 and was finished and dedicated by President Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1966. West Virginia State University
West Virginia State University (WVSU) is a public historically black, land-grant university in Institute, West Virginia. Founded in 1891 as the West Virginia Colored Institute, it is one of the original 19 land-grant colleges and universities established by the second Morrill Act of 1890, which evolved as a diverse and inclusive campus. Following desegregation, WVSU's student population slowly became more white than black. As of 2017, WVSU's student body was 75% white and only 8% African-American. The university's Gus R. Dana Lee Lynch (born March 26, 1949) is an American politician and a Democratic member of the West Virginia House of Delegates representing District 44 from January 12, 2013 to January 9, 2019. He was defeated on November 8, 2018 by 19-year-old Caleb Hanna. Tom Clark is an American politician from West Virginia. Since 2024, he has been a Republican representing the 48th District in the West Virginia House of Delegates. Nicholas County, West Virginia
Nicholas County is a county located in the central region of U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,604. Its county seat is Summersville. The county was created in 1818 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for Virginia Governor Wilson Cary Nicholas. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.2%) is water. In 1863, West Virginia's counties were divided into civil townships, with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state, and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts.
