This article lists the many characters of ''Futurama,'' an American animated science fiction sitcom created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series follows the adventures of a late-20th-century New York City pizza delivery boy, Philip J. Fry, who, after being unwittingly cryogenically frozen for one thousand years, finds employment at Planet Express, an interplanetary delivery company in the retro-futuristic 31st century. Along with the employees of Planet Express, ''Futurama'' includes a large array of characters, which include co-workers, media personalities, business owners, extended relatives, townspeople, aliens, and villains. Many of these characters were created for one-time gags, background scenes, or other functions, but later gained expanded roles. ''Futurama'' is an American animated science fiction sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company and later revived by Comedy Central, and then Hulu. The series follows Philip J. Fry, who is cryogenically preserved for 1,000 years and revived on December 31, 2999. Fry finds work at the interplanetary delivery company Planet Express, working alongside the one-eyed mutant Leela and the robot Bender. The series was envisioned by Groening in the mid-1990s while working on ''The Simpsons''; he brought David X. Cohen aboard to develop storylines and characters to pitch the show to Fox. Following its initial cancellation by Fox, ''Futurama'' began airing reruns on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block, which lasted from 2003 to 2007. It was revived in 2007 as four direct-to-video films, the last of which was released in early 2009. Futurama Season 7
The seventh season of ''Futurama'' consisted of 26 episodes split equally across two broadcast seasons: 7-A and 7-B. It premiered on Comedy Central on June 20, 2012. A box set containing the 13 episodes of Season 7-A was released as ''Futurama: Volume 7'' and another box set containing the 13 episodes of Season 7-B was released as ''Futurama: Volume 8''. On April 22, 2013, Comedy Central announced that season 7 would be the final season of the series. The final episode aired on September 4, 2013. Despite the fact that it was originally intended as the final season, Hulu greenlit an eighth season in February 2022, which premiered on July 24, 2023. Episodes Comedy Central chose to air some parts of season 7 out of production order. Futurama Season 4
The fourth season of ''Futurama'' began airing on February 10, 2002 and concluded after 18 episodes on August 10, 2003. The complete 18 episodes of the season have been released on a box set called ''Futurama: Volume Four'', on DVD and VHS. It was first released in Region 2 DVD, Region 2 on November 24, 2003, with releases in other regions following in 2004. The season was re-released as ''Futurama: Volume 4'', with entirely different packaging to match the newer season releases on July 17, 2012. This is the last season that composer, Christopher Tyng, used a live orchestra before switching to a produced score, starting with Season 5. This is also the last season of the show to air on Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox, and the last season of the show's original run. The eighth season of ''Futurama'' consisted of ten episodes. It premiered on Hulu in the United States on July 24, 2023. Although the seventh season was intended to be the final season, having concluded in September 2013, Hulu greenlit the eighth season in February 2022. All of the main voice cast returned, including John DiMaggio after he spent a month in negotiations to sign a new deal with Disney. This season has alternatively been titled the eighth season (production), and the eleventh season (broadcast). ''Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs'' is a 2008 American direct-to-video adult animated science-fiction film based on the animated series ''Futurama'', and the second of four straight-to-DVD films that make up the show's fifth season.
