Calaveras Creek is a waterway that starts near Martinez, Texas and runs for fifteen miles to its mouth at the San Antonio River. It is the source of Calaveras Lake where it is dammed near Elmendorf. Martinez, Texas
Martinez is an unincorporated community in eastern Bexar County, Texas, United States. In 1990, its population was reported to be 75 residents. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 27,466. It is located within the Greater San Antonio metropolitan area. History Martinez was a station on the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway in 1877. Its population was 50 in 1910, with a store owned and operated by W.C. Schlather. It remained the same in 1940, with the opening of three more businesses. It continued to grow slowly, with the population reaching 75 in 1990. It was listed on county maps in 2000, but with no further population records. In the 2020s, it has a population of 27,466. Geography Martinez lies near Converse at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 1346 and 1516, ten miles east of Downtown San Antonio. San Antonio River
The San Antonio River is a major waterway that originates in central Texas in a cluster of springs in midtown San Antonio, about 4 miles north of downtown, and follows a roughly southeastern path through the state. It eventually feeds into the Guadalupe River about 10 miles from San Antonio Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. The river is 240 miles long and crosses five counties: Bexar, Goliad, Karnes, Refugio, and Wilson. History Naming the river The first documented record of the river was from Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca on his explorations of Texas in 1535. Calaveras Lake (Texas)
Calaveras Lake is a reservoir on Calaveras Creek, located 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of Downtown San Antonio, Texas, US. The reservoir was formed in 1969 by the construction of a dam to provide a cooling pond for a series of power plants, called the Calaveras Power Station, to supply additional electricity to the city of San Antonio. The dam and lake are managed by CPS Energy of San Antonio. Together with the smaller Victor Braunig Lake, Calaveras Lake was one of the first projects in the nation to use treated wastewater for power plant cooling. The reservoir is partly filled with wastewater that has undergone both primary and secondary treatment at a San Antonio Water System treatment plant. Elmendorf, Texas
Elmendorf is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. It is part of the San Antonio—New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area. Its population was 1,862 at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1885, and named after Henry Elmendorf, a former mayor of San Antonio, and a German-Texan. For a long time, the biggest employer was Star Clay Products. Geography Elmendorf is located in southeastern Bexar County southeast of downtown San Antonio at the junction of Farm to Market Road 327 and the Southern Pacific Railroad.
