Calaveras, Texas is an American community located in Wilson County, Texas, Wilson County, Texas. The population is approximately 100. Calaveras is southeast of San Antonio, Texas, San Antonio. History The settlement was originally named "Wright" when it was founded in 1860, in Bexar County, Texas, Bexar County. A boundary change in 1869 put it into Wilson County. In 1885, upon the opening of a post office, the community received its current name. The arrival of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway in 1886 brought prosperity and population growth. In 1900, Calaveras achieved its maximum population of 369. The post office closed in 1925, and after subsequent businesses closing down, the town slowly reduced its population to approximately 100. Geography The community is located by the junction of U.S. Highway, US Route 181 and farm road 3444. The San Antonio River passes south of Calaveras. Bexar County ( or ; es, Béxar ) is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in South Texas and its county seat is San Antonio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,009,324. Bexar County is included in the San Antonio– New Braunfels, TX metropolitan statistical area. It is the 16th-most populous county in the nation and the fourth-most populated in Texas. San Antonio And Aransas Pass Railway
The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway first began operation in the U.S. state of Texas in 1886. It was developed by Uriah Lott and businessmen of San Antonio as a direct route from the city to Aransas Bay on the Texas Gulf coast. It was eventually absorbed in the 20th century by Southern Pacific. Background Uriah Lott, a transportation entrepreneur, engaged his friends Richard King and contractor Mifflin Kenedy in development of three railroad lines in Texas to improve connections from major cities to smaller ones, and to trading areas in Mexico. The Corpus Christi, San Diego and Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Railroad connected Corpus Christi and Laredo. The St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway ran from Houston to Brownsville through the Rio Grande Valley and related stops. San Antonio River
The San Antonio River is a major waterway that originates in central Texas in a cluster of springs in midtown San Antonio, about 4 miles north of downtown, and follows a roughly southeastern path through the state. It eventually feeds into the Guadalupe River about 10 miles from San Antonio Bay on the Gulf of Mexico.
