Cairns Unity Team
The Cairns Unity Team, also known as Cairns Unity, the Unity Team or simply Unity, is an Australian political party that competes in local elections for Cairns Regional Council. Until the 2024 election, Unity had a majority on council and held the mayoralty. Bob Manning (mayor)
Robert Charles Manning (born 16 October 1945) is the Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, Queensland, Australia. Early life Manning was born in Cairns, and attended Edge Hill State School, and Cairns State High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) from the University of Southern Queensland. Manning served three years in the Australian Army including service in the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971. Career Manning's first major position was as CEO of the Longreach Shire Council for eight years. In 1984 he returned to Cairns and became Secretary and then CEO of the Cairns Port Authority (including the Cairns Airport) for eighteen years from 1984 to 2002. After resigning his role at the port as a stand against "bullying tactics" by the Queensland Government, Manning began consulting work in Jordan and South Korea. 2020 Queensland Local Elections
The 2020 Queensland local elections were held on 28 March 2020 to elect the mayors and councils of the 77 local government areas in Queensland, Australia. The elections were held in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and on the same day as the state by-elections in Bundamba and Currumbin. Party changes before elections A number of councillors joined or left parties before the 2024 elections. Political parties Queensland councils are largely non-partisan. Most wards are not contested by political parties and are rarely successful when they do. The 2024 Queensland local elections were held on 16 March 2024 to elect the 2024 Queensland mayoral elections, mayors and councils of the 77 Local government areas of Queensland, local government areas in Queensland, Australia. The original scheduled elections date of 30 March 2024 was moved ahead to 16 March to avoid clashing with Easter, Easter holidays. The 2016 Queensland local elections were held on 19 March 2016 to elect the mayors and councils of the 77 local government areas in Queensland, Australia. The Queensland Greens had their first-ever local election victory, with Jonathan Sri being elected in The Gabba Ward in Brisbane. Lockyer Valley mayor Steve Jones died on 20 February 2016 after a brain bleed saw him collapse during a media interview. Localism describes a range of political philosophies which prioritize the local. Generally, localism supports local production and consumption of goods, local control of government, and promotion of local history, local culture and local identity. Localism can be contrasted with regionalism and centralized government, with its opposite being found in the unitary state. Localism can also refer to a systematic approach to organizing a central government so that local autonomy is retained rather than following the usual pattern of government and political power becoming centralized over time. On a conceptual level, there are important affinities between localism and deliberative democracy. This concerns mainly the democratic goal of engaging citizens in decisions that affect them.
