Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell RSA (12 April 1883 – 6 December 1937) was a Scottish Colourist painter, renowned for his depictions of the elegant New Town interiors of his native Edinburgh, and for his work on Iona. From October 2011 - March 2012 the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art held a major solo retrospective of Cadell's work, the first since that held at the National Gallery of Scotland in 1942. Life and work Francis Cadell (pronounced "Caddle") was born in Edinburgh, the son of Dr Francis Cadell FRCSE (1844-1909), a wealthy surgeon and his wife, Mary Hamilton Boileau (1853-1907). Francis William Cadell (9 February 1822 – 1879) was a European explorer of Australia, most remembered for opening the Murray River up for transport by steamship and for his activities as a slave trader. Early life Cadell was born in Cockenzie, Haddingtonshire, Scotland, the second son of Hew Francis Cadell (ca.1791 – 27 April 1873), mine-owner and shipbuilder of a notable Scottish family. He first arrived in Australia in January 1849 as captain of the schooner ''Royal Sovereign'', visiting Adelaide, Circular Head and Sydney, sailing in ballast for Singapore in June. Grace Cadell
Grace Ross Cadell (October 25, 1855 – February 19, 1918) was a Scottish doctor and suffragist, and one of the first group of women to study medicine in Scotland and qualify. She was, with Elsie Inglis, one of the initial entrants to the Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women, set up by Sophia Jex-Blake in 1886. She stood up to Jex-Blake over a disciplinary matter, being dismissed from the school and subsequently successfully sued Jex-Blake and her school. Her career as a physician and surgeon was devoted mainly to the care of women and children. She became an active suffragette as was well known for public acts of defiance in the cause of women's suffrage. She was prominent in providing medical care and refuge for her fellow suffragettes, some of whom were released into her care directly from episodes of force feeding in prison. Thomas Cadell (1742–1802), often referred to as Thomas Cadell the elder, was a successful 18th-century English bookseller who published works by some of the most famous writers of the 18th century. The business was continued by his son, Thomas Cadell (1773–1836), often referred to as Thomas Cadell the younger, who went into business with William Davies as Cadell & Davies until Davies death in 1819. Florence St John Cadell (14 August 1877, Cheltenham – 30 January 1966, Edinburgh) was a Scottish artist and patriot, involved in the early days of the Scottish National Party with her friend Wendy Wood. Her artworks are usually signed St John Cadell, disguising her femininity. Robert Cadell
Robert Cadell (16 December 1788 – 20 January 1849) was a bookseller and publisher closely associated with Sir Walter Scott. Life He was born at Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland, the fifth son of John Cadell, a Laird of Cockenzie, and Marie Buchan, his wife. Cadell's career began as a clerk at Archibald Constable & Co., Sir Walter Scott's publisher, where he later (1809) became a partner in the business. The connection to Constable was also personal: Cadell married his daughter Elizabeth in October 1817. She died less than nine months later. Arnau Cadell (also spelt Gatell or Catell) was a 12th–13th-century Catalan sculptor. He is best known for creating the cloister of the monastery of Sant Cugat. Biography Cadell was a Catalan architect, sculptor and master builder. He was in charge of a workshop of travelling artisans specialized in ornamentation depicting biblical themes. It is believed that Cadell went to Sant Cugat with his workshop to work on the monastery there. In addition to the capitals and cloisters he designed at the monastery of Sant Cugat, which was begun in 1190, he is also attributed with similar work in the Cathedral of Girona. He has also been linked to the design of the portals of the church of St. Peter in Santpedor and at the Santa Maria de Manresa basilica. Lieutenant Alexander Richard Cadell (19 August 1900 – 14 May 1928) was an English cricketer. Cadell was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium-fast. Cadell made his first-class debut for the Royal Navy in 1922 against the British Army at Lord's. From 1923 to 1925 Cadell represented the Royal Navy a further three times. In 1923 Cadell made his County Championship debut for Hampshire, representing them in a single match against Leicestershire. After nearly a two-year break from first-class cricket, Cadell returned in 1927 to play for the Royal Navy against the touring New Zealanders. 1927 also saw Cadell make a single appearance for the Free Foresters against Oxford University.
