C B Cox Stakes
The Ted Van Heemst Stakes is a Perth Racing Group 2 Thoroughbred horse race held under weight for age conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 2100 metres at Ascot Racecourse, Perth, Western Australia in December. Prizemoney is A$250,000. History The race is considered the main lead up to the Perth Cup held on New Year's Day. The distance of the race was reduced by 300 metres (2008) to coincide with the shortening of the Perth Cup from 3200 metres to 2400 metres in 2009. In 2003 the race was run at Belmont Park Racecourse. Eurythmic Racehorse With Jockey Ca
Eurythmic (1916–1925) was a versatile Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who had the ability to produce a brilliant finishing run in staying races and he also won important sprint races, too. At four he won 12 of his 13 starts including the Caulfield Cup and Sydney Cup. When Eurythmic finished racing he was the greatest stake-winner in Australia. He was later inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Breeding He was bred by the young breeder, Noel Thompson at the Yarraman Stud, west of Scone, New South Wales. Belmont Park, Western Australia
Belmont Park Racecourse is one of the two major horse racing venues within the Perth, Western Australia metropolitan area, the other being Ascot Racecourse, and is located just outside of the central business district on the Burswood Peninsula surrounded by the Swan River. On 24 December 1910 Belmont Park held its first harness race meeting, conducted by the Western Australian Trotting Association (WATA). Piping Lane
Piping Lane (foaled 1966, died 1996) was a brown Australian Thoroughbred racehorse gelding by Lanesborough out of the mare Londonderry Air by Piping Time. Piping Lane came to prominence by winning the 1972 Melbourne Cup over 3,200 metres at odds of 40/1. Piping Lane was owned by R.E. Prevost of Epping Forest, Tasmania and his racing had been confined to Tasmania, where he had won $12,638, prior to April 1972. He was then purchased for $6,000 by Ray W. Trinder, then 69, and a licensed amateur jockey and also an owner-trainer. Trinder had purchased the horse with the specific aim of winning the Melbourne Cup. Piping Lane was sent to be trained by George Hanlon of Melbourne. He was allotted 48 kg in the cup and with many top jockeys unable to ride at this weight John Letts of Adelaide South Australia was given the ride. Battle Heights
Battle Heights was a notable New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. A son of Battle-Waggon from the mare Wuthering Heights, he was foaled in 1967 and was trained throughout his career by Tim Douglas. Battle Heights started in 115 races and raced until he was 10 years old when he was forced into retirement after breaking down in the 1977 VRC LKS Mackinnon Stakes. During his career, he raced and won in every season from the age of three until ten and was successful over distances ranging from 1,100m to 3,200m. He was also second to Rose Mellay in the 1974 Auckland Cup over 3200m. Battle Heights was later ridden by C.Walsh in the Cullinan spelling paddock in the Western Districts of Queensland. Caryl described the horse as still having that zest for racing, and misbehaved quite often. Tawrrific
Tawrrific (1984–1999) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who is best remembered for winning the 1989 Melbourne Cup. Trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by Shane Dye, he won in the then record time of three minutes and 17.1 seconds. Early career After doing his early racing in New Zealand, Tawrrific won the South Australian St Leger at three, and, despite finishing 12th in the 1988 Melbourne Cup, had shown staying talent in winning the AJC St Leger at four, and finishing fourth in the Sydney and Brisbane Cups. Melbourne Cup winner Allotted 54 kilograms for the 1989 Melbourne Cup, Tawrrific was placed in lead-up races at Sandown, Caulfield, Flemington, and Moonee Valley, but fell out of favour with many punters when finishing second-last in the Caulfield Cup.
