COLOR Latina
COLOR Latina (Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights) is a reproductive justice organization in Colorado. History Flora Rodriguez Russel, Charlene Barrientos Ortiz and Melanie Herrera Bortz met in 1996 at an event from the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) and started the plans for what would become COLOR. Herrera Bortz worked at the Latin American Research and Service Organization, and Ortiz and Rodríguez Russel worked at the Denver Department of Public Health and Hospitals. The NLIRH-Colorado Caucus received $5000 in seed money from NLIRH, and Herrera Bortz led the establishment of the state coalition. The group received financial sponsorship from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, and a total of $12,000 from NLIRH. In December 1999, the group separated from its fiscal sponsors and became the independent organization COLOR. Flora Rodríguez Russel
Flora Rodríguez Russel (1932 - January 2, 2023) was a social worker and attorney in Denver, Colorado. She championed reproductive justice and children's rights. Biography Flora Rodríguez Russel was born in Española, New Mexico. Rodríguez Russel and her husband lived in Santa Fe and then Albuquerque. The couple moved to Denver in the early 1960s. She pursued higher education after her eighth child. She graduated from Metropolitan State College of Denver with a degree in Behavioral Sciences. She earned a Master's of Social Work from the University of Denver and completed coursework in Social Work Administration. She earned her Juris Doctor from University of Denver Law School. During her higher education, Rodríguez Russel felt alone since there were few other women in her class at law school. National Latina Institute For Reproductive Justice
The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice (Latina Institute) is a reproductive justice organization representing the Latina community living in the United States. Previously the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, the organization started as The Latina Initiative, which was created in direct response to the lack of Latina visibility on reproductive health and rights issues. Its mission is to ensure the fundamental human right to reproductive health for Latinas, their families and their communities through education, advocacy and coalition building. Founding Latina Institute commenced operations as an independent organization in 1994.
