COAS (Pakistan)
The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) is a position in the Pakistani Army held by a four-star general. As the highest-ranking officer, it is the most powerful position in the army. This is the senior most appointment in the army who is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in a separate capacity, usually consulting with the Chairman joint chiefs to act as a military adviser to the Prime Minister and its civilian government in the line of defending the land borders of the country. The Chief of the Army Staff exercises responsibility of command and control of the operational, combatant, logistics, and training commands within the army. The appointment, in principle, is constitutionally subjected to be for 3 years after the approval by the President on the recommendations of the Prime Minister. Field Marshal (Pakistan)
Field marshal (FM) is the highest rank in the Pakistan Army awarded by the government of Pakistan to officers of the Pakistan Army in recognition of distinguished service. Although it is a current and authorized rank with a pay grade of "Apex Scale," it has been conferred only twice in history—on Ayub Khan in 1959 and Asim Munir in 2025. It is an honorary rank and comes with no additional powers and pay grade. It is equivalent to admiral of the fleet in the Pakistan Navy and marshal of the air force in the Pakistan Air Force, and while it is an ordinarily senior rank in Pakistan army, it can be refer as five-star general "standard rank scale" to distinguish it from other military insignias. Chief of General Staff (abbreviated as CGS) is the most coveted position within the Pakistan Army after that of the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). Although the COAS is the head of the land forces, the CGS is "the organizational lead on both intelligence and operations", hence being in charge of the Military Intelligence (MI) and Military Operations (MO) Directorates. The General Headquarters (abbreviated Army GHQ) is the direct reporting and the command post of the Pakistan Army, located in the Chaklala at the vicinity of Rawalpindi, adjacent to the Joint Staff Headquarters (JS HQ). History In 1851, the British Army in India made an permanent headquarter in Rawalpindi when Marquess of Dalhousie decided to stationed the 53rd Infantry Regiment to protect India from Afghan intervention. In 1854, Robert Milman from the Diocese of Calcutta had built the city's first Garrison Church and a telegraph office. It is also the site where Robert Milman is buried following his death in Rawalpindi in 1876. The Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Army (abbreviation: C-in-C of the Pakistan Army) was the professional head of the Pakistan Army from 1947 to 1972. As an administrative position, the appointment holder had main operational command authority over the army.
