CLG An Cheathrú Rua is a Gaelic games club based in the Gaeltacht area of An Cheathrú Rua, County Galway, Ireland. It is a member of the Galway GAA branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Notable players to have played for the club include Seán Óg de Paor and Sean Ó Domhnaill, members of Galway's All-Ireland winning teams of 1998 and 2001. In 1996, they became the first Gaeltacht, and second Connemara club to win the Galway Senior Football Championship beating Oranmore/Maree in the final. The only previous time the county championship was won by a Connemara side was in 1938 when it was won by Oughterard. In 2022, the club lost the senior status that they had held since 1987, when they were crowned Galway Junior Football champions. Another demotion followed in 2023, with back-to-back relegations finding An Cheathrú Rua competing at the junior grade for the 2024 season. Gaelic games () are a set of sports played worldwide, though they are particularly popular in Ireland, where they originated. They include Gaelic football, hurling, Gaelic handball and rounders. Football and hurling, the most popular of the sports, are both organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Carraroe
Carraroe (in Irish language, Irish, and officially, , meaning 'the red quarter') is a village in Connemara, the coastal Irish-speaking region (Gaeltacht) of County Galway, Ireland. It is known for its traditional fishing boats, the Galway Hookers. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sports, amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball, and GAA rounders. Seán Óg De Paor
Seán Óg de Paor (born 24 December 1970) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played at senior level for the Galway county team. De Paor comes from An Cheathrú Rua in the Connemara Gaeltacht, where he attended the local national school, Scoil Mhic Dara. It was there he started playing Gaelic football, and he captained the team that won Corn Uí Chonaire - a competition between Gaeltacht national schools in Galway - two years running, in 1982 and 1983. From there he went on to secondary school in St Jarlath's College in Tuam, where he further developed his Gaelic-footballing skills. He then went on to attend University College Galway, captaining its 1992 Sigerson Cup-winning side. Throughout this period, he was also regularly playing football for his club, An Cheathrú Rua, and he was on the team that was promoted to senior status in 1987, and he played a vital role when the club won the Senior County Championship in 1996 and Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta in 1997. The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) () is the premier inter-county competition in Gaelic football. County (Gaelic games), County teams compete against each other and the winner is declared All-Ireland Champions. Oughterard GAA
Oughterard GAA () is a Gaelic football club based in Oughterard, County Galway, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is a member of the Galway GAA branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Oughterard had a hurling team in the 1920s, but is primarily a football club. Oughterard teams compete from the groups of under-6 to Senior. The club facilities are situated in Corribdale on the Pier Road in Oughterard. They include two pitches, a full-size walled pitch, a training pitch, a 600 capacity covered stand, a small terrace, changing rooms, meeting rooms and other facilities.
