CBNM-FM
CBN (640 kHz) is a public AM radio station in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It carries a news, talk and information format and is the local Radio One station of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. CBN transmits 10,000 watts, and is a Class A station broadcasting on a clear-channel frequency, shared with KFI in Los Angeles, the dominant station on 640 AM. CBN uses a non-directional antenna located off Thorburn Road near Exit 44 of the Outer Ring Road on the Trans-Canada Highway. With its non-directional signal and low dial frequency, CBN can be heard by day around most of Southeastern Newfoundland. At night, it can be picked up across much of the eastern half of North America with a good radio, but is strongest in Atlantic Canada and Eastern Quebec. CBN programming is also heard in St. John's on CBN-1-FM on 88.5 MHz. For listeners who have trouble picking up CBN 640's signal clearly in the downtown area, this "nested rebroadcaster" provides an alternative. ... All-news radio is a radio format devoted entirely to the discussion and broadcast of news. All-news radio is available in both local and radio syndication, syndicated forms, and is carried on both major US satellite radio networks. All-news stations can run the gamut from simulcasting an all-news television station like CNN, to a "rip and read" headline service, to stations that include live coverage of news events and long-form public affairs programming. NewTel Communications
NewTel Communications was a telephone and internet service provider in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Originally known as the Avalon Telephone Company, it served the Avalon Peninsula and later became the Newfoundland Telephone Company and served several additional regions: southwestern Newfoundland between Port-aux-Basques and Corner Brook; part of the Burin Peninsula; Windsor and Grand Falls; and most of Labrador. This was as a result of the acquisition of four smaller companies and their phone services from 1948 to 1962. On 9 June 1979, it acquired the Labrador Telephone Company serving Labrador City from the Iron Ore Company of Canada and, in late 1988, it acquired Terra Nova Tel from Canadian National Railways, adding other communities on the island including Gander.
