CATSINaM
The Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM) is the peak national body that represents, advocates for, and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and midwives in Australia. History CATSIN was founded in 1997 to formally represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and midwives. A grant from the Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation provided for the first national meeting of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses in August 1997. Held in Sydney, the three-day meeting developed a series of recommendations for strategies and initiatives to advance the recruitment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into nursing. In 1998, CATSIN was incorporated and until July 2012, led by its founding executive director, Sally Goold, a Wiradjuri woman. Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander
Indigenous Australians are people with familial heritage from, or recognised membership of, the various ethnic groups living within the territory of contemporary Australia prior to History of Australia (1788–1850), British colonisation. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) is the largest trade union in Australia with over 300,000 members. The union is run by nurses, midwives and assistants in nursing/personal carers to advance the industrial, political and professional interests of the nursing and midwifery professions. ANMF is a federated union, with branches in each state and territory in Australia. Sally Goold
Sally Sophia Goold (née Bamblett) is a Wiradjuri woman who became the first Aboriginal nurse in New South Wales, Australia. Goold was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia on 1986 and named the Senior Australian of the Year in 2006. Early life and education Goold was born in Narrandera, New South Wales. After moving to Sydney as a child, she went to St Peters Public School. When Goold was 14, she dropped out of school to work in retail. At 16 years old, she began her nursing training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and became the hospital's first Aboriginal nursing student. Later after finishing her training, Goold extended her studies by earning a nurse education diploma and went to Queensland University of Technology for a Bachelor of Applied Science. Cultural safety is the effective nursing practice of nursing a person or family from another culture; it is determined by that person or family.
