C. F. Powell
Cecil Frank Powell (5 December 1903 – 9 August 1969) was an English particle physicist who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1950 for heading the team that developed the photographic method of studying nuclear processes and for the resulting discovery of the pion (pi-meson), a subatomic particle. Personal life Powell was born in Tonbridge, Kent, England, the son of Frank (a gunsmith) and Elizabeth Caroline (née Bisacre) Powell. He was educated at a local primary school before gaining a scholarship to the Judd School, Tonbridge. Following this, he attended Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, graduating in 1925 in natural sciences. After completing his bachelor's degree, he worked at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, under C.T.R. Tonbridge ( ) (historic spelling ''Tunbridge'') is a market town in Kent, England, on the River Medway, north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, south west of Maidstone and south east of London. Cockcroft–Walton Generator
The Cockcroft–Walton (CW) generator, or multiplier, is an electric circuit that generates a high DC voltage from a low-voltage AC. It was named after the British and Irish physicists John Douglas Cockcroft and Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton, who in 1932 used this circuit design to power their particle accelerator, performing the first accelerator-induced nuclear disintegration in history. They used this voltage multiplier cascade for most of their research, which in 1951 won them the Nobel Prize in Physics for " Transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles". Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson (30 August 1871 – 19 October 1937) was a New Zealand physicist who was a pioneering researcher in both atomic and nuclear physics.
