Bass Coast Shire
The Bass Coast Shire is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the southeastern part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 35,327. It includes the towns of Bass, Cape Paterson, Cape Woolamai, Corinella, Coronet Bay, Cowes, Inverloch, Kilcunda, Lang Lang, Newhaven, Rhyll, San Remo, Summerlands and Wonthaggi as well as the historic locality of Krowera. It also includes the popular tourist destination Phillip Island. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Bass, Shire of Phillip Island, Borough of Wonthaggi, parts of the Shire of Woorayl, Shire of Korumburra and City of Cranbourne. The Shire is governed and administered by the Bass Coast Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is the council headquarters in Wonthaggi, with other service centres located in Cowes, Grantville and Inverloch. Cowes, Victoria
Cowes is the main township on Phillip Island (Victoria), Phillip Island in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. It is about two hours' drive from Melbourne and can also be reached by coach, or passenger ferry from Stony Point on the Mornington Peninsula. The Shire of Woorayl was a local government area about southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1888 until 1994. History Initially part of the Shire of Narracan, Woorayl was first incorporated as a shire on 25 May 1888. It annexed the South Riding of the Shire of Alberton on 14 March 1890, and the Mirboo Riding of the Shire of Traralgon on 1 May 1891. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1928 until 1994. The Shire of Bass was a local government area about south-southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1871 until 1994. Its administrative centre was located in Archies Creek. History Bass was first incorporated as the Phillip Island Road District on 8 September 1871, and became the Shire of Phillip Island and Woolamai on 24 December 1874. When the Phillip Island Riding was severed on 19 September 1928, its name changed to the Shire of Woolamai, and finally the Shire of Bass on 8 January 1929. Summerlands is a locality and a former residential subdivision on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia, located in the south-west corner of the island, close to a little penguin breeding colony. In 1985, the Victorian government decided that, to protect the penguin rookery, further development of the subdivision would be prohibited and all the properties would be progressively purchased by the state. Rhyll, Victoria
Rhyll is a small fishing town on Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the north-east corner of the island. It is named after Rhyl, a holiday resort in Denbighshire, Wales. At the , Rhyll had a population of 836. The first European to arrive in the area was George Bass, who landed in 1798 to make repairs to his ship. He returned in the same year with Matthew Flinders and a memorial for this landing is maintained close to Rhyll pier. A temporary British settlement called Flagstaff was established in 1826, and was settled in 1856. The post office opened on 19 September 1889. Newhaven (once known as Woody Point) is a town in southern Victoria, in the south Gippsland region. Located on Phillip Island, adjacent to the channel known as The Narrows, it is on the island side of the bridge linking Phillip Island to the mainland.
