Baillieston
Baillieston () is a working class suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. It is about east of the city centre. It also gives its name to Ward 20 of Glasgow City Council and forms part of the Glasgow East constituency of the UK Parliament. Geographical position Once a separate village, Baillieston is now on the periphery of the Glasgow urban area, situated west of a major interchange between the M8, M74 and M73 motorways and the A8 trunk road, between the town of Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire, and the neighbouring Glasgow neighbourhoods of Sandyhills, Barlanark and Mount Vernon, Glasgow, Mount Vernon. Suburban developments in the vicinity such as Barrachnie, Garrowhill, Springhill, Glasgow, Springhill and Swinton, Glasgow, Swinton are generally considered to fall within the larger modern Baillieston district. Baillieston (ward)
Baillieston (Ward 20) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed: the ward decreased in size and population, and returned three members. Boundaries Located in the far east of Glasgow, the core of the ward since 2007 includes Baillieston as well as Barrachnie, Garrowhill, Springhill, Swinton, Wellhouse, Easthall, Daldowie and Broomhouse with the northern boundary being the M8 motorway) and the eastern and southern limits being the city borders with North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire. Broomhouse, Glasgow
Broomhouse is a residential area in Glasgow, Scotland. It is about east of the city centre. Historically a small mining village and later the site of the Glasgow Zoo, in the early 21st century it grew substantially as an affluent Suburb, commuter suburb. Although close to Baillieston and within the Glasgow boundaries, the neighbourhood has a G postcode area, G71 postcode which has often led to it being associated with Uddingston, the main town for that district which is about southeast in the South Lanarkshire local authority area. Location Broomhouse is in the south-east of the Glasgow city area. It is bounded to the north by a railway line (historically part of the Rutherglen and Coatbridge Railway) which divides its territory with that of Bailleston, while to the south the A74(M) and M74 motorways, M74 motorway separates it from Daldowie. Bannerman High School
Bannerman High School is a state secondary school in the Baillieston suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. It is a non-denominational, co-educational, comprehensive school within the Glasgow City Council local education authority. The school teaches pupils from years S1 to S6. It has a capacity for 1400 pupils and has approximately 100 members of teaching staff. The current head teacher is Seonaidh Black. Associated primary schools The six associated primary schools are Caledonia Primary, Carmyle Primary, Mount Vernon Primary, Garrowhill Primary, Sandaig Primary and Swinton Primary. Baillieston Railway Station
Baillieston railway station is located in Caledonia Road on the southern boundary of the Baillieston area of Glasgow, Scotland, with the Broomhouse area on the other side of the tracks. It is on the Whifflet Line (a branch of the more extensive Argyle Line), east of Glasgow Central. Train services are provided by ScotRail. The line was built in the period 1864–1866 by the Caledonian Railway and was called the Rutherglen to Coatbridge branch. The new station opened by British Rail on 4 October 1993 under the financial management of the Strathclyde PTE. Garrowhill ( or , ) is a residential area within the wider suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated approximately east of the city centre. M8 Motorway (Scotland)
The M8 is the busiest motorway in Scotland. Mount Vernon, Glasgow
Mount Vernon is a residential area in the east end of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It directly borders Sandyhills and Foxley to the west, while Barlanark is the closest neighbourhood to the north, Barrachnie and Baillieston to the east and Carmyle to the south, although Mount Vernon is separated from these by areas of open land, including Early Braes public park and the former Kenmuir farm. Swinton, Glasgow
Swinton is an eastern suburb of the Scottish city of Glasgow, north of the areas of Baillieston and Garrowhill and east of Springhill. It is now concurrent with the 19th century Easterhouse village (whereas the large housing scheme of the same name lies across the M8 motorway to the north of Swinton). The hamlet of Swinton began to emerge with the building of cotton hand loom weavers' cottages in the early 1790s. A housing development was constructed in the 1920s, Virtual Mitchell with more in the 1970s, but most of the current neighbourhood was built from the 1990s onwards. |
Sandyhills
Sandyhills is an area of the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde and has fallen within the Shettleston (ward), Shettleston ward of Glasgow City Council since 2007. The area is bordered by Shettleston to the west, Barrachnie (part of Baillieston) to the east, Mount Vernon, Glasgow, Mount Vernon to the south-east and Tollcross, Glasgow, Tollcross to the south-west; it is separated from Springboig to the north-west and Barlanark to the north-east by the North Clyde Line railway.
