John Sands is an Australian printing company and former distributor of games and computer hardware that is now a wholly owned subsidiary of American Greetings. The business was founded in Sydney, Australia by a 19 year old English immigrant John Sands in 1837. In 1851, John Sands and Thomas Kenny founded Sands and Kenny in Sydney. Holly Hobbie is a fictional character and children's toy created by American painter and illustrator Denise Holly Hobbie. Origin In the late 1960s, at the encouragement of her brother-in-law, Hobbie sold distinctive artwork of a cat-loving, rag dress-wearing little girl in a giant bonnet (headgear), bonnet to American Greetings in Cleveland, Ohio.
