Moldova ( , ; ), officially the Republic of Moldova ( ro, Republica Moldova), is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The unrecognised state of Transnistria lies across the Dniester river on the country's eastern border with Ukraine. Moldova's capital and largest city is Chișinău. Most of Moldovan territory was a part of the Principality of Moldavia from the 14th century until 1812, when it was ceded to the Russian Empire by the Ottoman Empire (to which Moldavia was a vassal state) and became known as Bessarabia. In 1856, southern Bessarabia was returned to Moldavia, which three years later united with Wallachia to form Romania, but Russian rule was restored over the whole of the region in 1878. Prime is a Moldovan generalist television channel. The channel is distributed via DVB-T2, by the cable and IPTV operators in Moldova and broadcasts through analogue terrestrial television at a national level. The owner of the channel is Moldovan Oligarchy, oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc. Since its inception, it was one of Moldova's most popular channels. The channel was criticized and on 4 July 2014, the Coordinating Council of the Audiovisual of Moldova sanctioned Prime and other channels for broadcasting Russian "informative-analytical" programs, which contained aggressive propaganda and promotes and increases fake news and information regarding the Ukrainian government. The Republican Party of Moldova ( ro, Partidul Republican din Moldova) is a political party in Moldova. History Republican Party of Moldova (RPM) was established on 15 August 1999. The Founding Congress adopted the party program and bylaws and elected the governing bodies, including the Party Chairperson, Ion Curtean. In the 5 April 2009 legislative elections, it did not pass the election threshold as it polled 0.09% of the vote. Before the early parliamentary elections of 29 July 2009, it withdrew from the race and campaigned for the Democratic Party of Moldova. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Stratan was elected leader of the Republican Party at the 1 August 2010 congress of the party by a unanimous vote. Cahul
Cahul (; also known by other alternative names) is a city and municipality in southern Moldova. The city is the administrative center of Cahul District; it also administers one village, Cotihana. As of 2014 census, the city has had a population of 30,018. Etymology and names The city of Cahul (russian: Кагул, Kagul, bg, Кахул, Kahul) is believed to have been inhabited for many centuries, although it has had a number of different names over the years – the name Scheia (Old Romanian for "Bulgarian") was recorded in 1502, and the name Frumoasa ("Beautiful" in Romanian) was recorded in 1716.
