Barisal ( or ; bn, বরিশাল, ), officially known as Barishal, is a major city that lies on the banks of the Kirtankhola river in south-central Bangladesh. It is the largest city and the administrative headquarter of both Barisal District and Barisal Division. It is one of the oldest municipalities and river ports of the country. Barisal municipality was established in the year 1876 during the British rule in India and upgraded to City Corporation on 25 July 2002. Barisal is Bangladesh's third largest information technology and financial hub. The city consists of 30 wards and 50 mahallas with a population of 328,278 according to the 2011 national census and with the voter of about 2.48 lakhs according to the 2018 voter list of city election. It is the only general public university in Barishal division and the country's 33rd public university. The university was established in 2011 and began academic activities at undergraduate level in six departments under four faculties on 24 January 2012. Barisal Division
Barishal Division is one of the eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh. Located in the south-central part of the country, it has an area of , and a population of 8,325,666 at the 2011 Census. It is the least populous Division within the entirety of Bangladesh. Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah is a Bangladeshi politician and businessman. He was elected as mayor of the Barisal City Corporation in 2018 city election. He is a son of Awami League politician Abul Hasanat Abdullah and grandson of Abdur Rab Serniabat. Early life Abdullah was born to Abul Hasanat Abdullah and Shahan Ara Abdullah in Barisal. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives of Bangladesh, there are 532 urban centres in Bangladesh. Barishal Airport is a domestic airport located in the southern city of Barisal in Bangladesh. GMG Airlines, Royal Bengal Airlines and United Airways previously operated flights to Dhaka from this airport. In April 2015, the national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines resumed weekly flights after nine years. Location The airport is located close to Barisal city in Rahamatpur area of Babuganj Upazila.
